    Notes:

Son of the Ninth Earl. This Douglas was born 1554 and rather early in life joined the household of Earl Morton. Coming into contact with Huntly and Errol, he joined in a plot to restore the Catholic religion in Scotland, having turned Catholic. He was disinherited by his father but subsequently came into the title and estates. In 1592 he gets into trouble over the Spanish Succession, in which Bothwell and his friends were interested.
Later we find him as King's Lieutenant in the North of Scotland, and the following year imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle for treason, when with the assistance of his Countess he escapes. Now he joins Huntly and Errol in an insurrection in the North, which being unsuccessful, he is persuaded to renounce the Catholic faith to avert punishment. He was reinstated in all his former honors in 1597, made a Privy Councillor, and the King's Lieutenant of Southern Scotland. In the "Raids of Dumfries" he proved his loyalty to the King against the Johnstones, and was rewarded. He slipped again, turning Catholic in 1608 and mixing with his old associates, he was banished, and died in 1611, in Paris.

  3. 6.  Claud (1st Baron Paisley) Hamilton was born in 1543 (son of James (2nd Earl of Arran) Hamilton and Margaret (of Morton) Douglas); died in 1621.

    Notes:

"In the entry (in Burke's Peerage) of Lord Claud Hamilton he is given the title of 1st Baron Paisley, and this is explained as being granted with the barony of Paisley on 29 July 1587. There is no rank of "Baron" in the Scottish Peerage; the equivalent to a Baron of the English Peerage is in Scotland a Lord of Parliament.

There was a feudal barony of Paisley, but that was incorporated into theLordship of Paisley which was returned to Lord Claud in 1585 (as it had been returned before in 1573 with the revocation of his previous forfeiture), and was confirmed in the charter of 29 July 1587. (Prior tothe turbulence of the religious wars, as the Commendator of Paisley, oras the lay Abbot of Paisley, he had been addressed as the Lord of Paisley, as had been his predecessor, his uncle, whose own predecessors in the Abbey had held Paisley as a Lordship - that is as a unification of a barony with one or more baronies or with other substantial landholdings.) There was also the separate barony of the Burgh of Paisley that, together with the Regality of the Burgh of Paisley, was united with the Lordship of Paisley in 1587 and then confirmed by the charter of 22March 1591/2 which granted to Lord Claud Hamilton, Lord of Paisley, the title and honours of a free baron and Lord of Parliament. He then became Lord Paisley, an hereditary peerage title, in addition to being Lord of Paisley, his feudal title."
