    "Reigned 871-899. He prevented the Danish conquest of England, defeatingthem at Edington(878) after a campaign of guerrila warfare. After hisvictory he allowed the Danes to keep their conquests in Mercia and EastAnglia provided that Guthrum, their King, was converted to Christianity.Alfred built a navy of Warships to defend the south coast against furtherDanish invasions (885-86 ;892-96) and protected Wessex with a chain offortifications. He took London (886), this gaining control of all Englandexcept the Danish areas."

    Alfred, the brother of Ethelred, was born at Wantage. He helped hisbrother gain a great victory over the Danes at Ashdown in 871. Alfredorganised the army and was the founder of the English Navy. By 877 theDanes had occupied London and reached Gloucester and Exeter, but theylost 120 supply ships in a fierce storm off Swanage. In 878 he was forcedto hide in Somerset and it was there arose the legend of the burnedcakes. He renewed the fight and won a famous victory at Edington inWiltshire the same year. After, the Danes agreed that their king,Guthrum, should be baptised and Alfred was godfather. Afterwards Guthrumruled Mercia but acknowledged Alfred as Overlord. The Mercian settlementdeveloped over the next 100 years into the body known as Danelaw. Beforethat, in 879 at Fulham and also near Rochester in 884, other Norse armieslanded. Alfred continued fighting until he was the acknowledged championof the English against the Danes. Alfred was scholarly, a writer,law-maker, pious and also a valiant fighter. Additionally he had a goodknowledge of geography. He was a most able administrator and alsoinstituted educational programmes. He founded monasteries and gave alarge t of his income to charities. His wife was Ealswith. Alfred died onthe 26th October, some say in 901, others 900, but the more generallyaccepted year is 899. He was buried at Winchester.

    Alfred married Ealhswith of Gaini in 868. Ealhswith (daughter of Ethelred Mucel Earldorman of Gainsborough) died in 902 in Winchestery As A Nun; was buried in Hyde Abbey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
