---Source:A short account of the Maitlands of Lauderdale
Richard (Sir) de Mautelent, the earliest undoubted ancestor of the familyof whom any substantial amount is known, probably came from
?Chivington?(Chevington), in Northumberland. He married Avicia, daughterand heiress of Thomas de Thirlestane and thereby acquired the lands ofThirlestane, Hedderwick and Blyth in the Scottish Border country before1258. It has long been known as Lauderdale, a valley running south-eastof Soutra Hill, south of Edinburgh. Tradition has it that Richard (Sir),one of the most influential barons in the land, defended his houseagainst English invaders including Edward I of England (1272 - 1307).
