He married Avicia, daughterand heiress of Thomas de Thirlestane and thereby acquired the lands ofThirlestane, Hedderwick and Blyth in the Scottish Border country before1258. It has long been known as Lauderdale, a valley running south-eastof Soutra Hill, south of Edinburgh. Tradition has it that Richard (Sir),one of the most influential barons in the land, defended his houseagainst English invaders including Edward I of England (1272 - 1307).
