    Asa W. CORN, who resides on Section 25 in the southern part of UnionTownship, where he is engaged in the manufacture of tile and lumber isa native of Montgomery county, and is numbered among its most activeand enterprising young men. He is a son of Albert Corn, one of theearly pioneers of the county of whom a sketch appears on another pageof this work. Our subject was born Feb 17, 1855, in Walnut Townshipand was educated in the district schools. As soon as he was old enoughhe engaged in farming and in working in the timber. After his marriagehe settled on the place where he now lives, he and his bridgebeginning life together in a little log cabin, in which they lived twosummers and one winter. He then replaced that humble dwelling by theneat and substantial frame residence which they now occupy. He gavehis attention to farming from 1878 until 1880, and in the latter yearhe commenced the manufacture of tile. In 1887 he began to make lumber,and now operates both a tile factory and a sawmill. He has all thefacilities for both industries, having a full equipment of the bestmachinery for the purposes, including two large engines, one for thefactory and the other for the mill, and, by strict attention tobusiness he has built up one of the best trades in the county, histile being of a superior quality and commanding a ready sale, as wellas his lumber. Mr. Corn married Miss Anna A. LEMMON and they haveestablished a cheerful, happy home, where comfort reigns supreme andhospitality abounds. Mrs. Corn is one of the 3 children of Jacob M.Lemmon, who is railway agent at Mace, where he has resided for 21years. He came to Indiana from Marysville, Union County, Ohio. Mr. andMrs. Corn have had 6 children, of whom the following four are stillliving: Nina A; Ernest W; Fern and John A. David and Marion died ininfancy. Our subject is generous and public spirited as a citizen,taking pride in the progress of his native county; he is upright as aman, and an active member of the Christian Church, whose interests hehas very much at heart; in his domestic life he is all that a truehusband and kind father should be, while his neighbors ever find himfriendly and obliging.     Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia Wright who died at the home of herdaughter, Mrs. Walter VanCleave in Chrisman, Ill., Thursday afternoonwere held from the local M.E. Church Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clockin charge of Rev. J.B. Johnson of Waveland, with interment at theHarshbarger Cemetery, near Ladoga. Mrs. Wright lived one mile east ofNew Market for a number of years and was a devout Christian woman,being a member of the Methodist Church here. Her husband, JamesWright, preceeded her in death a few years ago. She is survived by onedaughter, Mrs. Walter VanCleave of Chrisman, Ill., with whom sheresided; two sons, William of Bloomington and John of Crawfordsville.H.M. Derby. Clara Derby, Walter Pinkley and Sarah Yount sang"Beautiful Isles," "Abide With Me" and "Asleep in Jesus." Pallbearerswere William Buser, Edward Groves, Emmons Douglas, William Busenbark,Charles Keys and Roy VanCleave.     Per A. Aaron Foxworthy: James Corn was swept out of his mother's armsas they were fording Sugar Creek near Yountsville, Indiana. theCrawfordsville Public Library cemetery records indicate he was 2months and 18 days old at the time of death and buried in HarshbargerCemetery.

    Per compiler, SLJuhl: Having been born in this area and living there,it should be known that Sugar Creek is not a river, but it is anextremely wide stream and at certain times of year becomes veryswollen and flood like from rains in the northern parts of Indianaflowing down stream into the Wabash River and it's tributaries. Thereare large, deep holes in the stream that can suck a person down intothem and drown even the best of swimmers. Many adult folks have losttheir lives to Sugar Creek. Sugar Creek also runs through Turkey RunState Park that is in Fountain, Parke & Montgomery Counties where theearliest settlers in the state lived. This is also the area of theWea Indian Reservation, who were forced to migrate with the Cherokeeto the West, and the 1812 Indian Wars. At and near the Turkey RunState Park is a favorite place for camping, canoeing, hiking, andfishing along Sugar Creek. The first mill, known as the Lusk Mill,for the pioneers was located on the Sugar Creek at the now State Park. I must admit, that I also have seen some rivers that compare insize to the Sugar Creek. Alas, it was labeled a creek, but at timesit is just as treacherous and dangerous as any river can be.
