    (Research):Because Dr George, Dr William's father, left his estate to his grandson John in 1760, it is probable that Dr William never left Dundee, and had died by 1760, before his father. He is not described as "of Anniston" in Burke's Landed Gentry.

    [Upper panel] In memory of JOHN RAIT Esqr of Anniston born 1748, died at Anniston 1823. And of his wife ELIZABETH GUTHRIE daughter of JAMES GUTHRIE Esqr of Craigie who died 1814 and of their children viz WILLIAM died ... "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" And in ever loving memory of EILEEN ANN ARBUTHNOTT RAIT of Anniston, who died on Thursday the 11th of January 1904, aged 23; only and much beloved daughter of Colonel RAIT, C.B. of Anniston, and his wife KATHLEEN GEORGINA, youngest daughter of the honble WALTER ARBUTHNOTT of Hatton, Montrose. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God: Matt. V.VIII. Also GERTRUDE JEAN RAIT daughter of the late JAMES RAIT Esqr of Anniston and lady CLEMENTINA RAIT his wife and sister of the above Colonel ARTHUR JOHN RAIT C.B. of Anniston who died at Annesley Arbroath on the 9th day of September 1922.

    Notes:

    James Rait (1805-1877 ), J.P., D.L. for Forfarshire, was the son of John Rait (d. 1 825) of Anniston and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of James Guthrie of Craigie. He was a Captain of 15th Hussars and Lt.-Colonel in the Spanish Legion. In 1838 he married Lady Clementina Drummond Ogilvie, second daughter of David, 7th Earl of Airlie.

    Above the kirk door in Inverkeilor are the arms of Rait (Or, a cross engrailed sable) impaled with those of Ogilvy (Argent, a lion passant guardant gules crowned or), for James Rait of Anniston and the Honourable Clementina Ogilvy, daughter of David (7th) Earl of Airlie. Motto: "Spero meliora" - "I hope for better things".

    James married Lady Clementine Gertrude Helen Ogilvy on 17 Jul 1838. Clementine (daughter of David (4th Earl of Airlie) Ogilvy and Clementina Drummond) was born about 1819 in Scotland; died on 16 Oct 1848. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
