    "Kublai also spelled Khubilai , or Kubla Mongolian general and statesman,grandson of Genghis Khan. He was thus at one and the same time theoverlord of all the Mongol dominions which included areas as diverse asthat of the Golden Horde in southern Russia, the Il-Khanate of Persia,and the steppe heartlands where Mongol princes were still living thetraditional nomadic lifevand the ruler of his own realm of China. Togovern China, with its long and individual political and culturalhistory, demanded statecraft of a special order."

    "Kublai Khan was the fourth son of Tolui, the youngest of Genghis' foursons by his favourite wife. He began to play an important part in theextension and consolidation of the Mongol empire only in 1251, when hewas in his middle 30s. His brother, the emperor M?ngke, resolved tocomplete the conquest of Sung China, which had been planned by Genghis'third son, ?g?dei, and also to subdue Persiava task allotted to Kublai'sbrother H?leg?. Kublai was invested with full civil and militaryresponsibility for the affairs of China. He appears never to have learnedto read or write Chinese, but already he had recognized the superiorityof Chinese thought and had gathered around himself a group of trustworthyConfucian advisers."
