"Most of the early stuff was compiled by my grandmother's twin sister,Mina Lyon Rife. She dated the material 1956. She did a lot of research, and attributed some of the material from a 3 volumes titled "LyonMemorial". She indicated they were purchased in Boston at Goodspeed BookStore. I visited Glamis Castle about 10 years ago and have guidebooksfrom there that had family information, and I also picked up someinformation from various web sites.

MARCUS R. LYON
The subject of this personal narrative is one of the most successfuland progressive farmers within the borders of Tampico Township, his homebeing in section 6. He has made his special field of industry an eminentsuccess, and is highly esteemed and respected by those who know him best.
Mr. Lyon was born in Medina County, Ohio, February 27, 1815 andbelongs to an old Vermont family, which was founded in that state by hisgreat-grandfather and two brothers, natives of Scotland, who came to thenew world during the Revolutionary War. The great-grand- father openedup a farm in Orleans County. The grandfather, Nehemiah Lyon and thefather of our subject, Baxter Lyon, were both born upon that farm, whichis still in [the] possession of the Lyon family. The latter was born Julyl3,l816, and remained in his native state until twenty years of age, whenhe went to Medina County, Ohio, where he cleared, improved and cultivateda farm and also worked at his trade of blacksmith, which he continued tofollow for some years after coming to Whiteside County, Illinois. InMedina County he married Miss Sarah A. Vaughn, a native of New York and adaughter of George Vaughn. In December 1849, they came to this county, making the journey with teams, and they located near the present city ofMorrison where the father bought one hundred and sixty acres of land witha state script. Upon his place he built a frame house, 24x26 feet, and astory and a half in height, doing most of the carpenter work himself.
The first winter it was only sided up and was not lathed andplastered and the family suffered very much from the cold. In fact, during the first two winters they experienced many hardships and [de]privations, incident to life on the frontier. Upon his farm the fatheralso built a shop and did black smithing for his neighbors. As hisfinancial resources increased, he bought more land, until he owned nearlyseven hundred acres; and he was one of the most active, enterprising andprominent farmers of the county. Selling his property near Morrison, hemoved to Tampico Township, where he resided for a few years, and later hemoved to Harvey County, Kansas, where he opened up a new farm and becamethe owner of six hundred acres. There he died on his seventy-thirdbirthday. The wife and mother departed this life in October 1895, inWhiteside County, Illinois.
Marcus R. Lyon was about four years old when brought by his parentsto this county, and he was educated in the common schools of Morrison, which he attended only during winter months, the summer season beingoccupied with work on the home farm. After reaching manhood, he hadcharge of the place until twenty-five years of age. When nineteen yearsold he began running a threshing machine, and later bought and operateda horsepower machine for several years. Still later, he owned a steamthresher and also a corn-sheller, and now for over thirty-four years, hehas engaged in threshing, first around Morrison and later near hispresent home in Tampico Township.
In Jones County, Iowa, February 28,1870, was celebrated the marriageof Mr. Lyon and Miss Minerva Miller, a native of Warren County, Indiana, and a daughter of John T. and Charlotte (Morris) Miller. Her father wasborn in Ohio, but was reared and married in Indiana, and from the latterstate moved to Jones County, Iowa, where he opened up a farm and rearedhis family. His wife died there Nov.l,1895 and he survived her onlyabout one week, dying November 8, 1895.
To Mr. and Mrs. Lyon ten children have been born, namely: Lottie B;now the wife of Frank E. West, Tampico; Lewis L; who is married andengaged in farming on one of his father's farms; Gracie, who died at theage of twelve years; Hubart, who assists his rather in the operation ofthe home farm; Kate, at home; Rhoda M; who is attending the home school;Martha, who died at the age of a year and a half; Mina and Minerva, twins, at home; and Marcus R; Jr; at home.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Lyon located on a farm nearMorrison, he having purchased one hundred and twenty acres of the oldhome farm, and there they resided for five years. He then sold the placeand before night of the same day had purchased one hundred and sixtyacres of land on section 6, Tampico Township, where he now resides. Toit's further improvement and cultivation he has since devoted hisenergies, and has extended the boundaries of the farm until they nowenclose two hundred and forty acres of rich and arable land which he hasplaced under a high state of cultivation. Near it, he also owns anothervaluable and well-improved farm of two hundred and forty acres, and uponboth places is a good set of farm buildings. Progressive, energetic andindustrious, the success that he has achieved in life is due entirely tohis own well-directed efforts. He is a skillful farmer and a man of goodbusiness ability. The Republican party always finds him a staunchsupporter of it's principles and he cast his first presidential ballotfor Gen. U.S. Grant in l868. He has been a member of the school board foryears, and clerk of the district and always takes a commendable interestin everything which he believes calculated to advance the intellectual, moral or material welfare of his township and county. For half a centuryhe has been a resident of the county and has watched with interest almostit's entire growth and development, and has ever borne his part in it'sadvancement.
