" We made an excursion to Douglas Park, but had not the pleasure of meeting Mr and Mrs Douglas there from their being then at Harrowgate for the benefit of their health . That estate is situated near Hamilton, about 10 miles from Glasgow and was purchased by Mr. Gilbert Douglas soon after his marriage to my cousin, Miss Cecilia Douglas, then a beautiful young lady about twenty years old. Mr Douglas was much older, whose kind attention to her comforts gained her affections and his generosity towards Cecilia was appreciated. A new house was being built with a large garden and ormental grounds around it." and in 1813, " I was in Glasgow where I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Gilbert Douglas , whose company I was later deprived of enjoying, owing to a serious accident which happened to her when her carriage was upset going from Glasgow to Douglas Park"

Of the (Buchanan) daughters, Cecilia, her mother's namesake, married John Douglas, son of William Douglas of Leith, and Katherine Dunlop (see "Garnkirk"), and had, with seven sons, one daughter, the late Mrs. Cecilia Douglas of Orbiston. Mrs. Douglas rivalled the vitality of her cousin Mary. She was the longest liver of the subscribers to the Glasgow Tontine, and so came in for that valuable property. It is worth noting that she only won by a neck from another cousin, old Miss Speirs of Elderslie. These two offshoots of the same tough stock had for some time had the race to themselves. Mrs. Douglas died at Orbiston (which see) in 1862, aged ninety-one. One of her brothers was Sir Neil Douglas. The other six were well known West India merchants. Glenfinart House originally lay within the estate of the Earls Dunsmore. The land passed to the Douglas family, via Archibald John Douglas and Charles Douglas, then, in 1893, to Henry Pig?-Leschallas. Henry's son, Major John Leschallas, lived there with his family until 1926, when they sold the house and moved south, having previously sold off some parts of the estate in 1922. The relationship of Archibald and Charles to Sir Neil has yet to be established.

The scene was set for one of the most glorious, if not senseless engagements in British military history. Cardigan turned away and (supposedly) muttered 'Here goes the last of the Brudenells.' As the divisional commander left, he ordered the 11th Hussars (Lt Col John Douglas) to move out of the first line with the 13th Light Dragoons (Captain John Oldham) and 17th Lancers (Captain William Morris), to a position behind the 17th Lancers, becoming the second line. What was now the third line had the 8th Hussars (Lt Col Frederick Shewell) and 4th Light Dragoons (Lt Col Lord George Paget) in it. Each regiment would be in extended line, two deep. He also gave Cardigan a final warning: 'Advance very steadily and quietly'. The guns were 1? miles away and horses and riders should not arrive too tired after a prolonged gallop.

John Douglas (1811-1871), an Army officer who was present at the Charge of the Light Brigade, left ?102,873 on his death in 1871.

John married Rosa Maria Paget on 10 Mar 1842 in St George Bloomsbury, Middlesex, England. Rosa (daughter of Hon. Sir Arthur Paget, G.C.B and Augusta Jane (Lady Boringdon) Fane) was born on 1 Jan 1825; died in Mar 1900. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Natural daughter, possibly born in West Indies.
Her mother was apparently dead by 1851.

Cecilia Douglas, born in the West Indies, age 35, fundholder, was living with a family in Millport, Cumbrae, in 1851; in 1861 she was head of the household (with 8 rooms) on Shore Street, Port Glasgow, age 45, born in the West Indies, annuitant, with a female servant; in 1871 she was living in her own household of 6 rooms with a female servant at 43 Carnarvon Street, Glasgow. She may be the Cecilia Douglas, age 25, of independent means, born Scotland [sic], living at a boarding house in King Street, Port Glasgow, in 1841, although in this record there are three Scottish-born Douglas children Catherine (age 11), Colin (age 10) and Sholto (age 9) in the same household. There is no record of her death in Scotland.
