  6. 7.  George Green Mathews Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born between 1794 and 1806 in Greene County, Georgia; died between 1840 and 1850 in Greene County, Georgia.

    Notes:

George Green Mathews was born in Georgia, probably in Greene County, between 1794 and 1806 (birth date approximated from his age as given in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census records of Greene County, Georgia. Inasmuch as he was married in 1816, he was doubtless born around 1794. Between the years 1840 and 1850, he either died in Greene County, or moved elsewhere. He married 1st, in Greene County, Georgia, 5 February 1816, Cassandra WELLS (see marriage records of that county), daughter of John J. WELLS and Patsy Caroline FLOURNOY, by whom he had thirteen children. She was born in Georgia, year unknown. Patsy Caroline FLOURNOY was the daughter of Matthews FLOURNOY and Elizabeth Ann PRYOR. The Flournoy family were Huguenots who fled France in the 16th Century to escape persecution, settling first in Switzerland, and eventually coming to this country. Elizabeth Ann Pryor has a well-documented ancestry which can be traced back through several Royal lines a thousand years or so. George G. Mathews married 2nd, Caroline Jane BUCKLE, who had previously married 29 May 1827, in Richmond County, Georgia, James G. RINGGOLD, by whom he had two children. He resided near Greensboro, in Greene County, Georgia from at least 1820 until sometime after the year 1840. There is no Will on record in that County, and it is entirely possible that he may have moved to Alabama as did so many of the grandchildren of Gen. George Mathews. It is apparent that by 1850, the family had split up, as we find Julia, his daughter, then 17, living with her married sister in Alabama. Most of his children moved to Alabama, as did his brother Archer and his sister, Mary Pharr. He is mentioned in the Will of Gen. George Mathews, and in a previous Chapter, I have shown the deeds from he and others, conveying the lands that the General willed them in Scioto County, Ohio.

For our initial information as to the marriages and children of George G. Mathews we are indebted to the account written by his grandson, the late George Green Mathews of Ft Lauderdale, Florida. F. E. Mathews, grandfather of the compiler stated that he recalled his grandfather, Dr. George G. Mathews, mentioning the fact that he had returned to Greene County to attend family reunions on one or more occasion.

The Deed records of Greene County, Georgia, are replete with references to Geo. G. Mathews. He evidently was very active in the buying and selling of real estate. These deeds give many clues to the family and offer proof of some relationships. One deed of interest follows:
Recorded in Deed Book "MM", at page 299, of the records of Greene County, Georgia, is the following:
    "State of Georgia

"Signed 25th day of Sept. 1838

    "E. M. Metcalf (Seal) Recorded Oct. 23, 1838.
What a story there must be behind the foregoing deed. The exact relationship (if any) between all of the parties concerned has not been determined. James T. Johnson was a son-in-law of Geo. G. Mathews, having married his daughter, Corsaira (or Corcyra) on August 9, 1838.
Two other deeds also of record in Greene County, offer proof of the name of George G. Mathews' wife, Cassandra:
Recorded in Deed Book "GG", at page 313, of the records of Greene County, Georgia, is the following
