When there was no money left for William and his brothers' education, the family tutor, James Hogg, took his four pupils to Glasgow, supported them out of his own 'little patrimony' and sent the two eldest to university. This he continued when their father was in the Tower of London.
In June 1747, William obtained a commission in the regiment raised by Lord Drumlanrig and then, afterwards, served in the Scots Brigade; in about 1758, he received a commission in the 2nd Dragoons. At the end of the war, William apparently retired from the army and became a member of the Duke of Queensberry's household.He went into Parliament in 1768. The Duke of Queensberry who died shortly before William's father, had long treated William as his eventual heir to the Marquessate of Queensberry, failing male issue by his immediate successor, Lord March.
Sir William's uncle, Sir Alexander Dick, recorded in his Memoranda:'The Duke, shortly before his death, having a warm attachment to my nephew, Sir William, whom he sincerely loved from his proper behaviour to him while in Parliament, and considering that he had (children).... to provide for, he left him 16,000 pounds in money on their behalf....On the worthy Dukes's death...this new unkindly and ungenerous Duke refused to pay the money...My nephew seeks my approbation for suing the Duke in the court of session.'At the general election of 1780, the Duke refused to return him to Parliament. William's action before the court of session for 20,000 pounds (16,000 pounds plus interest) was successful; on 30 April, 1783, Queensberry's appeal was dismissed by the Lords. Sir William was so overjoyed by the news that he had an apoplectic fit while playing with his children, and died on 16 May 1783. Boswell mentions a Mr. Douglas, son to Sir John, an officer in the Greys, an amiable young fellow whom I hope to see in the circumstances which he deserves. However, Sir John did have two other surviving sons, at least one of whom was in the army. About sixty yards to the west of the Christ church in Mahabaleshwar is the Beckwith monument 4558 feet above sea level and reached by a bad stony path. It is a plain obelisk about thirty feet high and was erected from public subscription at a cost of Rs 3000. Sir Sidney Beckwith died here in 1831 while commander-in-chief. The subscribers put up an inscription and Lady Beckwith sent out another on a marble tablet. The influence of weather on marble rendered the second inscription almost illegible as early as 1843; the first inscription remains comparitively uninjured though the writing is much obliterated and blackened and can only be read with the greatest difficulty. For several years the monument has been regarded as sacred by the poorer classes, who resort to it for the purpose of obtaining answers to prayers. The first inscription on the west face runs :

"Sacred to the Memory of
Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Sidney Beckwith, K.C.B.,
Governor and Commander-in-chief of Bombay, and Colonel of
His Majesty's Rifle Brigade;
who, after along course of distinguished service, expired at his Residence on these Hills, on the 15th day of January
1831, aged 60 years.
Erected by a small circle of his friends in testimony of their admiration for his noble character and to perpetuate the memory of so good and amiable a man."

The other inscription on the east face runs :

"This Tablet is placed by Mary, Lady Beckwith, daughter of the late Sir William Douglas, of Kilhead, Bart as a memorial of the most devoted affection for her lamented husband, by whose sudden death she has been deprived of a most attached partner and friend and guide, in whom was combined every amiable quality by which the Christian character is adorned, and the intercourse of domestic life is endeared-a loss which can only be alleviated by the hope that looks beyond the grave. The sympathizing friends who erected this monument have kindly permitted a sorrowing widow to add her heartfelt tribute to their."

From 1812 to 1832, he was a representative peer for Scotland, was made a Knight of the Thistle in 1821, and created Baron Solway, of Kinmount, in the County of Dumfries, in 1833, which granted him an automatic seat in the House of Lords.

On his death without male heirs in 1837, the marquessate and baronetcy passed to his brother, and the barony became extinct.

Old St. Paul's, an Episcopalian church in Edinburgh with strong historical links to the Jacobites,contains a memorial window to the parents John Douglas, namely Henry Alexander Douglas and Elizabeth Dalzell, Henry's two sisters, Catherine and Christian and Henry and Elizabeth's son, Henry, the Anglican Bishop of Bombay. The memorial was erected by John's brother, Edward and his wife Hannah Charlotte Scott-Douglas.

His son's biography indicates that there might have been a brother called Hugh.

William Robert Keith Douglas (1783 - 5 December 1859 ) was a British politician and landowner. He was the fourth son of Sir James Douglas, 4th Baronet of Kelhead and younger brother of both Charles Douglas, 6th Marquess of Queensberry and John Douglas, 7th Marquess of Queensberry .
He represented the Dumfries Burghs constituency between 1812 and 1832 and served, on a number of occasions, as one of the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty . He owned sugar plantation estates in Tobago which had formerly belonged to his father-in-law, Walter Irvine.
After William Douglas's eldest brother succeeded to the Marquessate of Queensberry , he was granted a patent of precedence which gave him the rank and style of a Marquess's younger son (Lord William Douglas).
Lord William is buried at Dunino, Fife , a village close to his family seat at Grangemuir , near Pittenweem .

The will of James Sholto Douglas formerly of Tangiers and consul-general of Morocco but late of the City of Bath was proved 08/02/1830. In the brief will he left his holding of consolidated annuities in trust for his two daughters Basilia Mary and Anne Elizabeth for their lives, then to his sons Sir James Dawes Douglas and Sholto Douglas. He made no mention of property in Jamaica or of a residuary legatee; it appears that he had made an earlier settlement in 1826 and 1827, to which General Sir James Duff and Edward Bullock Douglas were trustees.

Probably the most missionary-minded of the early Bishops of Bombay was Henry Alexander Douglas. During his period and at his invitation the Fathers of St. John the Evangelist at Cowley were led to take up missionary work in the Bombay Diocese. The plans which he laid down for missionary work in the diocese make it clear that he was a man of statesmanlike vision. After a short Episcopate of eight years, which terminated with a fatal illness, he was succeeded by Louis George Mylne, whose Episcopate lasted twenty-one years in Bombay.

?2000 for acquiring land, the brothers Edward and John sailed for Sydney as cabin passengers in the Malacca and arrived in August 1851. In 1854 they went to the Darling Downs and bought, reputedly for ?50,000, the 64,000-acre (25,900 ha) station Talgai which in 1853 ran 20,900 sheep. The Douglas brothers found congenial acquaintances among the squatters, many of them newly arrived from Scotland.

Douglas mortgaged them in 1860 to Gilchrist, Watt & Co. to raise ?5000, they ran 1991 cattle. He had probably over-stocked and the evidence suggests that the Douglas brothers had not made the profits they expected from squatting. In 1861 Edward returned to Scotland

He declared it was his personal property and sent his title deeds to the British Ambassador, claiming diplomatic immunity. To reinforce his point, he hoisted the Union Jack from the roof. In the end, he was saved by the new King Victor Emmanuel of Savoy, who lent an ear to his pleas - perhaps with the help of a whisper from the Miraculous Virgin.

On March 23, 1898, Fr. Douglas died of the flu at the age of 78 and was buried in the crypt of the Casa S Alfonso house chapel along aside the Superiors General.

Lord James Edward Sholto Douglas committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor in the North Western Hotel at Euston Station in London on 5 May 1891. Contemporary reports state that Lord James suffered from bouts of depression - one report states that 'his lordship travelled from Ireland last night , and acted so strangely on the steamer, that the London and North Western railway officials ordered a man to accompany him from Holyhead to Euston.'

Lord James had previously appeared in court in June 1887, charged with breaching an order ofthe court and his own personal undertaking to cease stalking' a wealthy young lady named Mabel Edith Scott.

Francis Douglas was the eldest son of the 9th Marquess of Queensberry. Until 1893, Douglas was known by the courtesy title of Viscount Drumlanrig. As a young man, he was a lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.

In 1892, William Gladstone became Prime Minister for the fourth and last time. The Foreign Secretary in his administration was Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery. Rumours abound as to Rosebery's sexuality; although married with four children, it was often rumoured that he was bisexual. Whatever the truth of these rumours, there is no doubt that he made Francis Douglas his prot?g?. He was introduced to Rosebery around 1892 and, in spite of any obvious qualifications, Rosebery appointed him to be his private secretary. Seeking to advance his young friend, Rosebery obtained for him the position of a Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria. To qualify for this role, Francis needed to be a peer in his own right and he was accordingly created Baron Kelhead in June 1893.

Francis' father, the hot-headed Marquess of Queensberry and later bane of Oscar Wilde, was furious when his son was given entry into the House of Lords. Because Queensberry held no English titles, he had to rely upon being elected as a representative peer of Scotland in order to sit in the Lords. Although he had been a representative peer between 1872 and 1880, his fellow peers declined to re-elect him in 1880, due to his publicly professed atheism. Between 1880 and 1893, Queensberry found himself embroiled in a number of scandals, further details of which can be found at the foot of the page containing details of his peerage. When he heard of Rosebery's plan to elevate his son to the House of Lords, his reaction was typically violent. He wrote angry letters to Gladstone and Rosebery. He even wrote to the Queen, complaining of Rosebery's 'bad influence' on his son, which was probably an oblique accusation of homosexuality.

Soon after Francis' promotion, the Marquess pursued Rosebery to Bad Homburg in Germany where Rosebery was holidaying with the Prince of Wales. Queensberry, armed with a dog whip, was found lurking near Rosebery's hotel and the next day the local police chief was able to report to Rosebery that Queensberry had 'found it advisable to depart this morning with the 7 o'clock train for Paris.' However, news of the attempted assault started tongues wagging about the nature of the relationship between Rosebery and Lord Kelhead.

During the summer of 1894, Francis became engaged to a young woman named Alix Ellis. In October of that year, he accepted an invitation for a weekend's shooting at Quantock Lodge,near Bridgwater, the home of Alix's uncle, Edward Stanley (MP for Somerset West 1882-1885and Bridgwater 1885-1906). On 19 October, while out with his fellow shooters, he went intothe next field. After a few minutes, his companions heard a shot and, hurrying into the field,found Francis dead from a gunshot wound. At the subsequent inquest, the coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death, although public opinion was widely in favour of suicide.

Having lost one son in circumstances surrounded by rumours of homosexuality, it is possible that Queensberry was determined not to lose another, which may explain his implacablepersecution of Oscar Wilde six months later.
