FUNERAL SERVICES FOR J. M. COONS HELD
Services Conducted From Daughter's Home - Mr. Coons Had Long BeenResident of County. Funeral services for James M. Coons, whose deathoccurred Saturday morning at Wingate, were held at 2 Monday afternoonfrom the home of the deceased's daughter, Mrs. Jonathan VanCleave, atWingate. The services were in charge of Rev. B.E. Antrobus, pastor ofthe First Baptist Church of this city. Burial was at Wingate.
Mr. Coons was the son of George and Julia Coons and was born January27, 1826, in Overton county, Tennessee. In 1830 he came with hisparents to this county, when they settled on a farm six milessouthwest of Crawfordsville. Later his parents moved to this citywhere they resided until their death. The deceased's mother was ninetyyears old when death claimed her.
James M. Coons was married to Sarah VanCleave, whose death occurredtwenty-two years ago. They moved to Crawfordsville, twenty-five yearsago, Mrs. Coons dying after they had lived here three years. Sincethat time the deceased has made his home with his children, of whomthere are four. They are George Coons, of near New Market; Levi Coons,of two miles south or Crawfordsville; Mrs. Charles Francis orEnglewood, and Mrs. Jonathan VanCleave, at whose home Mr. Coons died.
The deceased was one of a family of six children, only one of whom,William Coons, now survives. He was a member of the Missionary BaptistChurch and was a man who held the respect and regard or all who knewhim.

James M. COONS, aged 90 died Saturday morning at 4 at the home of hisdaughter, Mrs. Jonathan VanCleave in Wingate, where he was making hishome; after an illness of a week; caused by a stroke of paralysis fromthe effects of which he gradually declined. Until this last illnessMr. Coons was in his usual health and for a man of his age was prettyrugged. The funeral will occur from the home of his daughter inWingate this afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. BEAntrobus, of this city. The burial will be in Wingate. James M COONSwas the son of George and Julia Coons. He was born in Tennessee Jan27, 1826 and moved with his parents to this county in 1830 being acontinuous resident of Montgomery County since that time. His parentssettled on land 5 miles sw of the city and during Mr. Coons' activelife was a farmer on the home place. After retirement he removed tothis city to reside, his home being in Englewood on East Main Street.The deceased was a good man of quiet demeanor and Christian faith. Hewas preceded in death by his wife several years ago, since which timehe has made his home with his daughters, Mrs. Mary VanCleave ofWingate and Mrs. Laura Francis of this city, and two sons, George ofNew market and Levi of two miles south of the city and one brother,William J. Coons, of this city who is 82.
