William, a retiree from New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio, was born in Ardmore on January 7, 1926 and graduated from Douglass High School in 1946. He joined the United States Army and served in World War II. After many years in Cleveland, William returned to Ardmore in 1982. Before sickness prevented, his face was seen at the Carter County Courthouse. A great love for people, as custodian William greeted and took time to chat with all employees in addition to anyone who frequented the courthouse. His past time was bingo. Here again, he added to his list of friends.
A member of the faith community, William departed from this mortal life Saturday, July 25, 2009 in Mercy Memorial Hospital at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 18 days. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his father, Eldridge Douglass. He leaves to forever cherish precious memories of a life well spent, his son and his wife of Cleveland Heights, Ohio and 2 grandchildren. Amongst his many cousins are Sammie Lornes, Lewis Douglass, and Ray Douglass, all of Marietta; Courthouse employees and
his bingo buddies.
