Notes |
- Samuel Gibson was born in Pennsylvania perhaps per the census records, but this is uncertain because his son George W. Gibson stated on thecensus records as well that his parents were born in Ohio. SamuelGibson can be placed in Brown County, Ohio before c.1838 due to theland record for Putnam County, Indiana since it clearly states that hewas from Brown County, Ohio. It is known that he moved from BrownCounty, Ohio to Putnam County, Indiana between c.1833 and c.1837,because his daughter Mary was born in c.1833 in Ohio and his son Johnwas born in c.1837, Putnam County, Indiana. His brother James musthave moved with him as well since he purchased land first in 1837Greencastle area one year before Samuel did so, and both propertylines connected to one another. Samuel Jr. bought 160 acres of landnear the Greencastle, Clinton Township area shortly after his sonJohn's birth in c.1838 in Putnam County, Indiana. Perhaps Samuel &James families lived together on the farm that James purchased inc.1837 until Samuel purchased his property in c.1838 next door toJames. John Gibson had to have been born somewhere in c.1837, andwhy not on his uncle's farm? The family then stayed in the same areafor many years. It is most likely that Samuel and Catharine both diedin Putnam County, but as yet no records have been found to verify thatassumption. There are other early "Gibson" folks to Putnam County,Indiana, but it is unknown if they are related to Samuel Gibson.
For now, those children born in Ohio have been listed as born in BrownCounty until further evidence crops up to the contrary. There were noGibson's listed in the c.1820 Census for Putnam County, Indiana, so itcan be said that the family was in Brown County, Ohio up until c.1837. It can probably be also safely assumed that the rest of the childrenafter c.1837 were born in Putnam County on the farm that Samuel hadpurchased since the census records indicate that the family remainedin Putnam County for a long while after c.1837 A.D..
