Oh,and Sandy, there's another thing I wanted to menti
on. Remember wetalked about Cossman being recorded or transcribed as Copman in theCossman-Julich marriage record? I suspected it was due to the oldfashioned way a lower case s was written. Just last week, I stumbledon another possible explanation, which seems more likely than mine. Ifound a 2003 posting on the rootsweb message boards for the Gassensurname. The researcher tells about finding the name in America asGapen and Gapon. Then he tells about a often mistranscribed Germanletter, called an "ess-tset." He quotes from a book 'Discovering YourGermanic Ancestors', which says "The ess-tset is an unusual Germanletter. It is transcribed as ss and can appear in the middle or at theend of a word. It is not a capitol B and never appears at thebeginning of a word..." The researcher goes on to say that the typesetthat he'd found for the ess-tset looks very, very similar to a p (butthe back line extends above the top of the loop, and the loop extendsmore to the right....much more oval than round). Since no such letterexists in English, the German letter would have to be translated intoour ss (thus keeping the original pronunciation of the name). Now, Ihave my gg. grandparents original 1857 marriage certificate (the sameyear and county Peter H. Cossman & Anna Maria Julich married), so Iknow for a fact that the priest wrote in German. If the priest wroteCossman using the ess-tset, and the person at the records office didnot recognize it as a German letter (and translate it to ss) thenthey'd surely write it in the record book as Copman. Even if therecords person did recognize the letter, and wrote a perfect ess-tset(which they shouldn't have. Being an English record, they should havetranslated it into English), but even if they did, most anyone comingalong later transcribing Clinton records would have copied it asCopman. So there you have it. I think it's a really likelyexplanation. Wendy" [Transcribed 01 March 2009, SLJuhl RNBSC,Compiler; sljuhl1234@yahoo.com]
