"SCOTT, GEORGE H. PAGE 2
The son, Simpson S., who was killed in the battle on Saline River,Ark., was too young and too short to enter the army, so he gave awrong age and put lifts in his shoes in order to enter. His chum whofought beside him, held him in his arms as he was dying and leaned himup against a tree when he, himself, could no longer stay with him.Simpson gave him his ring and asked him to give it to his sister,Betty (Sarah Elizabeth, who later married John Hamilton). The chumwas later taken to Andersonville Prison and the ring taken from him.It being so near the end of the war, he lived to be released, thoalmost starved. Many others died there."
