- Colonel Douglas Forde Douglas-Jones, who died at Worthing on Tuesday, in his 82nd year, entered the Royal Artillery in 1866 from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. In 1878 he passed with distinction through the Staff College, the Commandant, General Sir Edward Hamley, especially selecting him for employment in 1879 on the International Commission for the Delimination of the Bulgarian Frontier, of which he was also appointed secretary. Afterwards he was a Professor of Military History, and wrote several treatises on tactics and other subjects. These works elicited an expression of thanks for their usefulness from Lord Roberts, who was then in India.
Colonel Douglas-Jones served under Lord Roberts and Sir Evelyn Wood on the Headquarters Staff at the War Office. He was on the staff from 1878 until his retirement in 1903, when he devoted himself to the spiritual welfare of the Army. He became chairman of both the Army Scripture Readers' Society and the London City Mission. In 1871 Colonel Douglas-Jones married Fanny, eldest daughter of the late Admiral Sir Crawford Caffin, K.C.B. : she survives him
