- He was an officer in the service of the Horse Guards, and fought in the Battle of Minden on 1 August 1759. He also was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 11th Dragoons.
He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Haddington Burghs between 1768 and 1774 and was the King's Remembrancer of the Court of Exchequer between 1771 and 1791.
He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Warrender, of Lochend, co. Haddington on 18 January 1772.
