    • NOTE FROM JOYCE ELKINS TO SANDRA: c.03 Aug 1977 A.D., "Grandma Elkinswas born in 1903, and never knew her parents. Her father was killedwhen she was four years old in November 1907. Her mother died at 27years old in February 1908 when Grandma was about four-five years old. Grandpa and Grandma were not related." Continued Notations: "Gladys(Hellen/Ellen) Farner, only child of John H. and Margaret Ann RectorFarner, was born in Parke County, Indiana. She was orphaned at theage of five and raised by her grandparents, William and Martha Rector. She started dating her husband (Samuel Clarence Elkins) to be aftermeeting at church in Bloomingdale, Indiana. They courted for twoyears. They were married at the court house in Covington, FountainCounty, Indiana. She was blessed with fourteen children and waswidowed at the age of 63 years. She has been baptised through theBaptist Church in Rosedale, Parke County, Indiana.       PLEASE NOTE: ON GLADYS MARRIAGE APPLICATION WITH HER GRANDMOTHER ASWITNESS, MARGARET RECTOR, HER MIDDLE NAME IS GIVEN AS "HELEN", HOWEVERON HER DELAYED BIRTH CERTIFICATE SHE CLAIMED HER MIDDLE NAME AS"ELLEN". On her death certificate her middle initial is used as"E.", so it would seem that she preferred for herself the middle nameof Ellen over that of her given middle name of Helen possibly.However, her third daughter she named "Helen".
      1977 - Letter dated 03 August from Joyce Clore Elkins of Montezuma,IN. to daughter Sandra Elkins Wethington (Juhl): "You might be at adead end, because in 1920 or so the court house in Fountain Co.(Covington, Indiana) burned down and destroyed records. GrandmaGladys had a hard time getting S. S. (social security) because of it.And a lot of the relatives were recorded there. Grandma Gladys -Grandma Martha (Kiger) and her son Tom raised her. Mostly on the oldhomestead in Grange Corner, Indiana. Grandma & Grandpa courted fromthat area." [ 08 Feb 2005, SLJuhl, compiler]
      1977 - Letter dated August 09 from Joyce to daughter Sandra (asabove): "Grandma remembers grandpa telling about walking from Judson,Ind. (Indiana) where he was born and going to Jungle Park (north ofTurkey Run Park-used to be a Wea Indian reservation area) to see hisgrandfather who always scared him because he was Indian and a huge manand had such big hands. ...I have a love letter grandpa wrote grandmawhen they were courting".       1977 - Letter written from Joyce to Sandra after the Covered BridgeFestival in Parke County, Indiana in October. Letter probably sentnear first of November that year or there abouts. "Also, from what wehave been able to figure out no Indian on my side, but Grandpa Elkinswas considered 1/8 Cherokee from his mothers side Clara Tyler whosefather was William Tyler and mothe Nancy Ann McCarty. Nancy Ann'sfather Cornelious McCarty was where the Indian came in. Also GrandmaGladys remembers them talking about someone named Boisie. GrandpaElkins grandfather William Elkins was an overseer of the Indians atJungle Park which is north of Rockville on US 41 about ten miles. NotTurkey Run itself (State Park)." [SLJuhl, 08 Feb 2005]
      2004 - See letters by Joyce Lorraine Clore written to Sandra LeeElkins McCoy Wethington (now Juhl) copied and under Joyce's name inthis work. [SLJuhl]. 04 Jan 2005: She was born in Fountain County,Indiana, but spent her life in Parke County, Indiana. She wasorphaned at the age of five, and raised by her grandparents, Williamand Martha J. Kiger Rector. She was widowed at age 63. Alldocumentation is kept in the Elkins and Rector Family volumes.[SLJuhl]

      Entered Into Eternal Rest thursday, Nov. 21, 1985, GLADYS E. ELKINSJudson--Gladys E. Elkins, 82, Judson, died at 9:12 p.m. Thursday inVermillion County Hospital, Clinton, of natural causes. She was ahousewife. She was born Sept. 11, 1903, in Cates to John Farner andMargaret Rector Farner. Her husband Samuel, died in May 1967.Survivors include four daughters, Vera Paddock, Newman, Ill., EvelynLunog, Blue Mound, Ill., and Helen Wall and Doris Walter, both ofJudson; seven sons, Joseph, Montezuma, Orville, Pennington Gap, Va.,James, Eugene, Kenneth, Sullivan, and Paul, Ronald and Donald, all ofSouth Bend; 35 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and fourgreat-great-grandchildren. She was a member of Montezuma ChristianChurch. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in Barnes Mortuary,Rockville, with the Rev. Joe Cook officiating. Burial is in WolfCreek Cemetery.
