Notes |
- Kim Douglass 7/7/07.
Susannah appears to have been a victim of the "Bastardy Clause" of the Poor
Law Amendment Act of 1834 : An Act for the Amendment and better Administration
of the Laws relating to the Poor in England and Wales (4 & 5 Will IV c. 76) -
wherein "Evidence of paternity claims now also had to be "corroborated in some
material particular", something that was often impossible to achieve. The Act
effectively made illegitimate children the sole responsibility of their
mothers until they were 16 years old. If mothers of such children were unable
to support themselves and their offspring, they would have to enter the
workhouse." (http://www.workhouses.org.uk/)
