Message Board Post:
I am looking for Parents or siblings of James M. Sherwood. James was born in
IN, 19 Feb 1835. James' parents may have been born in NY or PA (I believe
father was born in PA but other family members seem to think theer is some NY
connection.) James may have had a sister of La Paz, IN, who's married name was
Cross.
James married Josephine A. Walls b. March 1849, on December 25, 1870 in
Northern Indiana. Josephine is the Ohio born daughter daughter of Hugh Walls of
Scotland and Hannah Cox of England (married NY). I believe Josephine and James met
in either OH or IN. The Hughs, prior to 1870 census were living in Allen
county OH, in Richland Twp. The 1870 census lists Hannah Walls in Marshall County,
Bourbon Twp, IN (which is in the South Bend, IN area), living with Josephine
Walls (21), Jennie Walls (17), Robert Walls (7), and James Sherwood (32), a
saloon keeper.
Later information, handed down from family, is that a few years prior to the
marriage, was the birth of a son, Charles by a different mother. What we know of
Charles is that he lived in ID and CA. He sufferered from rheumatism and died
in his mid 30's in Santa Rosa, CA, He left two children and a wife (Ruby,
perhaps). Josephine and James also had a daughter, Zoe (5/9/1872). Zoe went on to
marry Calvin Tucker in 1888, had two sons, Elmer and Sherwwd, I believe. She
lost a Elmer when he was about 9. Sherwood Tucker passed in 1920, at an early
age. Calvin passed on in March of 1932, and Zoe remarried Eugene Weeks.
Josephine and James bore a son, Edward Hugh, 1-9-1881. He was a somewhat known
artist, illustrator and author of childrens books. He married Bertha Kies and
went on to have two children, one of whom was my grandfather.
I am looking for information on where James Milton Sherwood may have come from.
If anyone may know, any information would been welcomed greatly. I do know he
was born in IN, but his father may have been from PA.
Thanks
