Streatley as a village did not exist until the latter half of the 19th century. Until then the area known as Streatley (meaning a clearing by the street) was no more than a scattered farm hamlet, consisting of a few dwellings, tucked away in a fold of the downs, set back from the edge of the Chiltern Hills.
