- William George McHardy CVO was a Scottish businessman and philanthropist. He was born on June 9, 1926, and died on December 22, 2016. He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1992 for his services to the Royal Household. McHardy was known for his successful business career, having served as the chairman of the international conglomerate Hanson plc. In addition to his business success, he was also a well-known philanthropist, supporting various charitable organizations and serving as a trustee of several foundations.
Colonel William George "Charlie" McHardy, MC, CVO, MBE, who died 20
July, 2008, his 88th birthday, was born in Nairobi, 20 July 1920 and
was educated at Dulwich and the RMC Sandhurst, where he won the Sword
of Honour; he was awarded MC in Tunisia while serving with the
Seaforth Highlanders; for many years he was the Queen's Resident
Factor at Balmoral. He was appointed MBE in 1949, MVO in 1973 and
advanced to CVO in 1979. Charlie McHardy married in 1952, June
Cunningham-Jardine (d 4 September, 2008), scion of that LG family and
descended from the Jardine of Applegirth Baronets. Their son and two
daughters survive him.
