- "MRS. MATILDA FINLAY IS TAKEN IN DEATH
Mrs. Matilda Love Finlay, aged 92 years, 8 months and 5 days, passedaway in death at her home in Orion at 6:00 o'clock Monday evening,Oct. 8, following an illness of six days. On Tuesday of last weekMrs. Finlay, while walking about the lawn at her home, fell andfractured her hip bone, and although all medical care was given her,complications set in and pneumonia was the direct cause of death.Owing to her advanced age and her physical condition no attempt wasmade to reduce the fracture, with the hope that quiet withoutirritation from reducing the fracture would be more easy for her towithstand, but complications developed with the result that deathclaimed our oldest lady resident and a woman loved and respectedthroughout the community. 1836, In County Antrim, Ireland, and at the age of thirteen years cameto the United States in 1849, and the family settled first inPennsylvania, where she was married Oct. 4, 1855, to William Finlay.They moved to Orion vicinity in 1869, which has been her home eversince. She joined the Presbyterian Church at Morrisville,Pennsylvania in 1865, and on removing to Orion joined the MethodistChurch here by letter. Mr. Finlay passed away in death several yearsago. Left to mourn the passing of a loving mother and sister are, onedaughter, Mrs. Emily Hanna, with whom she has made her home since thedeath of Mr. Finlay; one sister, Mrs. Mary Garrity, who has residedwith her sister here for some time past; tow brothers Alexander L.Love, at present in California, and James A. Love, of Orion, togetherwith several more distant relatives. Funeral services are to be heldat 2:00 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon from the home. Rev. SidneyA. Guthrie, of Macomb, a former pastor here, will officiate, and willbe assisted by Rev. Frank Marston, pastor of the Orion Methodistchurch. Burial will be made in the family lot in Western Cemetery.In the passing of Mrs. Finlay Orion community looses it's oldest ladyresident, a pioneer of the community and a lady held in the highestesteem for courtesies to neighbors, and friends in time of distress, asplendid neighbor and a lady bearing the respect and esteem of all whoknow her. singers at the funeral are to be Mrs. J. E. Gustafson andRev. Frank Marston, and the pall bearers are Arthur Love, Edgar Love,Fred Love, Edwin Love, Asher Love and Lloyd Love."
