The Jameson Raid was a raid led by Doctor Starr Jameson who was laterPremier of The Cape Of Good Hope Colony (as Cape Colony is now called) in1904 to 1908. This attempted raid took place in December, 1896. This raidwas carried out by a group of British adventurers into Transvaal. Whilethis raid was unsuccessful, all adventurers captured, this raid played animportant part in the breakdown of the Boer and British relations. PrimeMinister Cecil Rhodes was believed to be an accomplice in this raid.

The Jameson Raid
After gold was discovered in the Transvaal, many British miners andprospectors came from Britain and British colonies to seek theirfortune. The Afrikaaner government resented the influx of new Britishoutsiders and imposed unfair laws and taxes upon them. Cecil Rhodes, whowas the Prime Minister of Cape Colony, a British Ruled Colony orderedJameson to seize control of the Boer republics in an armed takeover.Rhodes financed and organized the conspiracy.
The plan went as follows. The "Uitlanders" who thought they were beingunfairly treated by the Afrikaaner government would revolt and seizecontrol of the city in the name of "oppressed" outsiders. Jameson plannedon coming to "defend" theses British "outsiders." In order for Jameson toarrive on time,
however, he had to leave the British colony before the Revolt took place.
Unfortunately for Jameson, the revolt failed to take place, and OnDecember 29 of 1895, Dr. Leander Starr Jameson lead aa band of 500 armedmen and tried to seize control of the Boer republics in an "unofficial"takeover. 21 men lost their lives in the attempt for takeover andJameson, along with his men were tried in the Transvaal court. Jameson'ssentence only lasted 15 months. Rhodes denied any responsibility inorganizing the Raid and although Krueger knew better, he pretended thathe believed that the raid was unofficial."
