- I shall quote from book, "...the 1807 city directory(Glasgow)lists acousin, Samuel Dow, who was a spirit merchant. Samuel Dow was his(DuncanBan's) mother's brother Ewen McCalman's son. Sammy Dow became famous inGlasgow for his "Pigeon Blend" whisky.
The name 'Dow' was interchangeable with Dov, to which the 'pigeon'probably refers. Dow is an Anglicized form of McCalman, Calman being anold Irish name with Latin origins: columba, a dove. ...After Cullodensome family members adopted the surname Dow because the McCalmans wereknown Jacobites. McCalmans or Dows lived in and around the area ofBanavie near Fort William, adjacent to Glen Nevis and the Achintee farm, for more than two hundred fifty years.
Ewen McCalman, Duncan Ban's uncle, married Catherine Cameron, and thiscouple were parents to at least four sons: John, born in 1763; Ewen, born 1776; Samuel(the spirit merchant), born 1778; and, Archibald, dateunknown. The eldest son, John, married Ann McMillan, who bore elevenchildren, three of whom,. Samuel, Angus, and Hugh, later moved to Glasgowwhere they worked for their Uncle Samuel. Another of John and AnnMcCalman's eleven children, a daughter named Mary, married John McMillan,a crofter at Camaghel.
Their son, John, born in 1840, also went to Glasgow and became a spiritmerchant. This John McMillan married Jessie Cameron and had at leastseven children, the most distinguished of whom was Donald, magistrate ofthe burgh and justice of the peace for Lanark County. Donald and hisbrother, Hugh Ewen, started a fine drapery business in Partick, Scotland, and Donald designed and patented the MacMillan hunting tartan worn by thechief and his family. Ex-Baillie McMillan of Partick was also a foundingmember of the Clan MacMillan Society in Glasgow and served seven years associety chief. It was his...interest that persuaded Pipe Major JohnMacColl of Oban to compose the "Clan MacMillan March". Donald McMillandied in 1922 and is buried in the McMillan section of the old Kilmalliechurchyard beside his father and brother, wine merchants, John and SamuelDow McMillan...."
..."The Dow spirit firm was a revered Scottish concern that remained inthe family for more than 160 years until it was sold to a company namedAllied by Alistair Dow in the 1970s." The foregoing is from book,"MacMillans" by D. MacMillan."
