- Previously shown as daughter of Herbert (of Caerlaverock) 1st LordMaxwell. Burke's Peerage shows her as daughter of Sir Herbert (ofCaerlaverock) Maxwell.
"I suggest a change in your identification of Janet Maxwell, wife ofWilliam Douglas, 2nd of Drumlanrig. Your ID sheet for her is I17681.Both chronology and the authorities tell us that Janet (or Jean) Maxwellwho married William Douglas, 2nd of Drumlanrig, was the sister, not thedaughter of Herbert (of Carlaverock) 1st Lord Maxwell, and that they werechildren of Herbert (Sir) Maxwell. As you correctly show on sheet IDI14819, Sir Herbert Maxwell married Katherine (of Dalswinton) Stewartbefore 10 August 1386 and died before 16 October 1421. Their son Herbertthe 1st Lord died before 14 February 1453/54.
According to the article under Nithsdale in SP 6:474-476, the lst LordMaxwell had children by two wives, a child named Janet being listed asthe 6th child by Katherine Seton, the widow of Sir Alan Stewart ofDarnley. Darnley was killed in a feud in 1439. See BP&B, 106thedition, at 1986. If Katherine Seton thereupon married Lord Maxwell inthat same year, Janet, the sixth child of this marriage would not havebeen born until at least 1446, and probably a few years later. ThisJanet would have been far too young to have married William Douglas, 2ndof Drumlanrig, because Douglas died in 1444 (SP7:115), prior to Janet'sbirth.
SP6 :474-475 says that "Janet, wife of William Douglas of Drumlanrig, wasperhaps Sir Herbert's daughter." I can find no authority that says thatthe Janet who married William Douglas was a daughter of the lst LordMaxwell. BP&B at 2325 and Stirnet at "Maxwell01" both make Janet, thedaughter of Sir Herbert, not the lst Lord, the wife of Douglas ofDrumlanrig."
