George L. Maclean Was First Reeve of Finch Village

Finch, Ont., March 15 - George L. Maclaren, one of the most prominentfigures in the united counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry andprominent businessman of Finch, died this morning at his home here. Hewas in his 74th year.
A native of Finch township and life-long resident of this vicinity, Mr.Maclean won prominence not only in business circles but also in themunicipal affairs of the united counties. He was largely responsible forthe incorporation of Finch village and was elected its first reeve, whichoffice he help for five years, and in 1911 was acclaimed as warden of theunited counties. His son Gladstone Maclean is present reeve of Finch.
Mr. Maclean's parents came from Scotland in 1839 and settled in Finchtownship. There he was born in 1863. As a dairyman Mr. Maclean becamewidely known. He owned and operated a chain of cheese and buttermakingplants for many years. For about twenty years he was in the garagebusiness at Finch where he was General Motors representative.
During his long career Mr. Maclean was one of the most prominent andactive workers of Finch Presbyterian church of which he was an elder andalso a member of the board of managers. A staunch conservative he was aformer president of the Stormont Conservative Association. On severaloccasions he refused to accept nomination to contest federal andprovincial seats in the riding.
Surviving are his widow, the former Janet Johnston, three sons Croil andGladstone of Finch, and Johnston of Ottawa, and one daughter Mrs. J GCameron of Cornwall. He also leaves two brothers, Alex and Lorne Maclean,both of Finch township and two sisters, Mrs. J Winters of Finch and Mrs.G Servage of Berwick.
The funeral will take place from his late residence on Wednesdayafternoon to Finch Presbyterian church for service at two o'clock.Internment will be in Finch Cemetery.
