- "The name of Noe appears in the genealogy given in the tale of thereasons for the migration of the Deisi (as already mentioned in chapter5) known as the Tucait Indarba nan Dessi:-
"Eochaid went over the sea to the territory of Dyfed and it is there thathe died, and his sons and his descendants. And from them [come] thekindred of Crimthan to this day, of which is Taulodar son of Rigin son ofCatien son of Clothien son of Noe son of Artur son of Petor son of Congarson of Goirtiben son of Alcon son of Tresun son of Aed son of Brosc sonof Corach son of Eochaid the Foreigner son of Art Corp"
Since the the migration of the Deisi occurred in legend around thebeginning of the 3rd century AD, and 10 generations seperate Eochaid theForeigner from Noe, then Noe (or Nuogoy as the Welsh sources call him)must have been born around 400-420 AD. The presence of Noe as animportant chief at a period contemporary with the birth ofColumba/Mungo's maternal grandfather Oengus (Dimma Mac Naue,) 3generations before Columba/Mungo and contemporary with the birth of theson's of Erc must be more than mere coincidence. It seems likely thatthis Noe would be Columba's great grandfather, a major "British" chiefwith Irish connections, and his territory of rule was probably not Dyfeditself - though his descendants may have inherited that kingdom - but ina part of North Britain which included Lothian. So Columba would be of"British-Scottish" origin."
