During the civil war (1648) he raised and supplied a body of men for the King's service. Joined forces with Marmaduke Langdale. Near Preston, on route to help the King he was captured by Cromwell's troops. He escaped, and hid in a cave in the wood (now known as Douglas Wood). Fled to Flanders.
