    • James was an eminent merchant of Boston. They had no family but her father came to live with them, and was there in 1677 when he died, and Capt. Oliver was one of the administrators of the estate. Capt. James was admitted freeman 1640, was of the artillery company 1651, was Lieutenant 1653 and Captain 1656 and 1666; was selectman 1653, and for several years inspector of the port. He was Captain of first military company of Boston 1673, was appointed to command of the company in the Narragansett campaign, and was one of the few officers that passed safely through the "great swamp fight." (Warden, p.12)
