- Doug Hickling points out:
"You may want to consider changing the identification of Angus Mor'smother to "A daughter of Gillies mac Somerled."
This identification is provided by Ronald Williams in THE LORDS OF THEISLES, at 132-133. Williams aknowledges that "some accounts state that"Angus Mor's father Donald of Islay, or (Donald of the Isles) Domhnall asyou show him, "made a second marriage to a daughter of Walter theSteward, although this may be doubtful . . ." In CLAN MACDONALD, DonaldJ. MacDonald of Castleton, at 38, quotes Hugh MacDonald of Sleat, writingin the 17th century, stating that Donald of Islay "married the daughterof Gillies by whom he had Angus, Alexander and Somerled." Only THE SCOTSPEERAGE, volume 5 at 35, says that Donald married "a daughter of Walter,High Steward of Scotland" and had Angus Mor by her. The author gives nocitation to authority for this statement although citing Hugh MacDonaldof Sleat's manuscript in the preceding paragraph as to other mattersregarding Donald's life. Brian Tompsett shows no connection betweenWalter, High Steward of Scotland and Donald.
