Notes |
- Betsy graduated from Peace College in Raleigh, N.C., and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Beaver College in English and political science.
In 1962, the Douglas family moved from Philadelphia to Hopkinton, where Betsy taught at Hopkinton High School and where she was chairman of the English Department. She introduced musicals and theater to hundreds of Hopkinton students.
In 1972, she and her husband started Decoy House Real Estate, which was located in Contoocook Village. Betsy enjoyed her real estate career, serving for five years as a trustee and director of the Tri-State Real Estate Institute. In 1983, she was voted Realtor of the Year and was president of the Concord Board of Realtors in 1984.
As an active member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Hopkinton, Betsy taught Sunday school, served on the vestry and was twice elected president of the Women of St. Andrew's. Betsy was instrumental in establishing the memorial garden, applying her lifelong love of gardening and flowers.
Betsy was also involved in the community, giving her time and energy to the Hopkinton Woman's Club and the Hopkinton Boys and Girls Club. Through her efforts, these organizations were able to create the respite care program to provide relief for housebound caregivers and to provide scholarships for students.
Surviving family members include Charles G. Douglas III and wife Debra of Concord; Margaret Douglas Frank of Contoocook; Eugenia D. and husband Dr. Charles O'Brien of Portland, Maine; and the family of the late Warren Nissen. Betsy also leaves six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
