  1. 2.  Edward (4th Bt of Newcastle) Blackett was born on 9 Apr 1719 (son of John (of Newby Park( Blackett); died on 3 Feb 1804.

    Notes:

He was High Sheriff of Northumberland 1757? 1758 and in 1768 became MP for Northumberland until 1774. He was colonel of the Northumberland Militia in 1759

In 1751 Sir Edward Blackett, 4th Bt., married Anne Douglas, sole heir of Oley Douglas, whose father had acquired the estates of the once powerful Carnaby family. This brought into Blackett ownership Halton Castle, a pele tower close to Hadrian's Wall, north of Corbridge, Northumberland.
The pele tower was first recorded in 1382, but a manor house was added to it in the 15th century. This latter building was largely demolished in 1696 by John Douglas and replaced by the present house, in part using masonry from a nearby Roman fort.

Sir Edward spent most of his time at Thorpe Lea in the south of England, but today Halton Castle is the principal residence of Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett. It is a Grade I listed building.

On his marriage Sir Edward also acquired Aydon Castle, about a mile from Halton Castle. The Castle is a particularly fine example of a 13th century English manor house, but was rarely used as such by the Blackett family, instead being used as a farmhouse until its transfer to the Ministry of Works in 1966. It has since been restored by English Heritage to reveal what remains of the 13th century fortified manor house and the 14th century additions.

  3. 7.  Mary Harris was born about 1689 (daughter of John Harris); and died.

    Notes:

    Married:
Mr. Bates, of Heddon, possesses many curious letters respecting the courtship of Oley Douglas, son of a former owner of Aydon Castle and Matfen. Oley married Miss Harris, the daughter of a London merchant, and it was their daughter, Anne, who carried Matfen into the Blackett family by marrying Sir Edward, fourth baronet. The marriage of Oley Douglas and Miss Harris took place in 1717. The bills for the bride and bridegroom's outfit have been preserved. The wedding ring cost jQ^ 5s., which is a proof that the lovers of the eighteenth century were in the habit of tying the nuptial knot in a solid and substantial manner. The brideofroom's suit was made in London, and cost ^6 12s. There was five and a half yards of cloth in it, which at i8s. per yard amounted to ;^4 14s. 6d. The material for the linings and pockets cost 5s. 6d., and the buttons and twist cost 2S., and the charge for making the suit was J^\\ los. The bride's dress, or rather her trousseau^ we should imagine, was also made in the Metropolis. We must admit that the items are quite unintelligible to us, but the ladies may understand the uses to which the bride put all the yards of lace, muslin, brocade, &c., set down in the bill. To begin with, there is an item of ;?i^ los. for five yards of looped lace at ;?2 i8s. The next is a charge of ;^4 los. for one and a half yards of what appears to be ''grounded" lace, and there is a charge of ;^4 is. for a further supply of looped lace. A yard and a quarter of cambric cost ;^i. The next item is ;?2 los. for two and a half yards of lawn. Five and a quarter yards of muslin cost jQ^ 15s. 6d. What could a lady want with twenty-eight yards of rich crimson flowered velvet ? The total cost of this was ;^42, being at the rate of 30s. per yard. The last item is ;^i7 los. for three and a half yards of gold brocade. The total cost of the material alone was ;^9i i6s. 6d., which seems to us to be a large expenditure for a lady's outfit in the early years of the reign of the First George.

    Notes:

He was a baronet and a member of the British House of Commons representing Ripon and Northumberland.
Blackett was the eldest surviving son of William Blackett and his wife Elizabeth Kirkley. He was Alderman and later Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was Member of Parliament for Ripon for a year from 1689 to 1690.
He bought Newby Park at Ripon, Yorkshire, demolished the old house on the estate and in 1690 with the assistance of Sir Christopher Wren built the splendid Newby Hall, which remained the family seat until 1748. He succeeded to the Baronetcy on the death of his father in 1695 and served as Member of Parliament for Northumberland from 1698 to 1700.
His first wife was Mary Norton only child of Thomas Norton of Langthorpe Yorkshire, who died without surviving issue. His second wife was Mary Yorke only daughter of Sir John Yorke of Gowthwaite and they had a large family. He was succeeded in the baronetcy by his son Edward who joined the navy and became a Captain.
