    The son, Simpson S., who was killed in the battle on Saline River,Ark., was too young and too short to enter the army, so he gave awrong age and put lifts in his shoes in order to enter. His chum whofought beside him, held him in his arms as he was dying and leaned himup against a tree when he, himself, could no longer stay with him.Simpson gave him his ring and asked him to give it to his sister,Betty (Sarah Elizabeth, who later married John Hamilton). The chumwas later taken to Andersonville Prison and the ring taken from him.It being so near the end of the war, he lived to be released, thoalmost starved. Many others died there." His parents settled in this county in 1834; he came 3 yearslater to Russell Twp. Was married Oct 13, 1838, to Mary V. McPherson,born May 25, 1817 by whom he had two children - Robert Duncan, bornApril 19, 1842; J. Randolph born July 22, 1844. He was married againin 1847 near Judson, Parke County to Mrs. Barnes, nee Nancy Todd bornJuly 10, 1820; one child Nancy Mabel born May 16, 1857. Mrs. Hamiltonis the only child in a family of 12 living, The otherwise with theexeption of a sister who lived to the age of 48 died of consumption inearly life. Her parents were the victims of the same disease. Herfather died at age 68; her mother 48. Mrs. Hamilton is now in her 60thyear and in good health which she attributes to a liberal daily use ofcold-water baths for the last 27 or 28 years. She has raised or hadunder her care at different periods of her life, some 17 or 18orphans. Mr. Hamilton is a kind husband, a good neighbor and anenterprising man." HAMILTON, farmer, Clinton Township, was born October 4, 1811, inClark County, Kentucky, son of James and Hannah (Ramsey) Hamilton,also natives of Kentucky. The parents had ten children, only five ofwhom are living. They came to this county when Hulbert was only fouryears of age, and he has been a resident here ever since. Mr.Hamilton was twice married. His first wife was Mary V. McPherson,natives of Scotland. His second wife was Nancy M. Todd, daughter ofJohn and Sarah Todd, natives of Virginia and of Irish descent. He hadhad five children--Robert L., born April 19, 1842; John R., born July22, 1844; Nancy M., born May 16, 1857; Hulbert L., born June 10, 1859. the parents of Mrs. Hamilton had twelve children, Mrs. Hamilton beingthe only one that lived to be grown. She died several years ago. Mr.Hamilton has a (Page 498) nephew, John H. Hamilton, and his family,living with him and keeping his house. Two of his children aremarried and he has supplied them with a home. One daughter diedleaving three or four children who now find a home with their kindgrandfather.     NOTE: Hulbert married Mary in 1838 in Jackson County, Indiana. By1840, they were living in Parke County, Indiana. Halbert/Holbert isnot found in the 1840 Jackson County census. When he marries NancyBarnes in 1847, he was listed - known as Halbert L. Hamilton. (It'seasy to mistake an "o" for an "a", plus a fancy "L" and an "S", whentranscribing depending on the handwriting of the original person whowrote the name.)

East Tenn, son of John and Jane Campbell Scott,natives of VA; his parents were married in Tenn and had a family of 10children; he being the 3rd; they removed to Fleming Co KY when he was12 and there resided til death. On Oct 8, 1829, he was united inmarriage to Sarah R. Lawson born April 15, 1809 in KY daughter ofJacob and Sarah Brice Lawson, natives of VA; had a family of 15children: Lucinda J, born May 2, 1831; Irena July 29, 1832; Julia AJan 19, 1834; James E Jan 3, 1836; John L, Dec 27, 1837; Wiliam H,March 13, 1839 (died Sept 1876); George M, April 10, 1841; Simpson S,March 24, 1843; Sarah E, Nov 24, 1844 (died in infancy); Sarah E, Jan9, 1846; Wesley T.
