Much more research is needed on the family for completion.
    16 January 2007, Tuesday
Indiana research on the Internet web site: www.Ancestry.com
1). Eliza (Elkins) Hamilton died in 1869 in Russell Twp, PutnamCounty, and is buried there at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. She leftFranklin with six children, and is not in the 1870 census record.Mary Reynolds Elkins Graham is helping the family in the 1870 census.
2). Franklin Hamilton has disappeared in the census records after theyear 1900. He never remarried. There are no obituary nor deathrecords available on the web site for him. It is highly likely thatthe Frank listed on Mother's records in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery-RussellTwp, Putnam County is accurate. This is the twp. and county whereEliza died, and he probably was buried there. Franklin probably diedin Putnam County while living with his daughter Alta and her husbandGeorge Proctor (1900 Census Record).
3). Otto Hamilton never marries and disappears in the census recordsafter 1910. In 1910 he was living with his brother and his childrenin Rockville, Parke County, Indiana. Otto probably died there aswell. However, I'm not certain as to where he was buried. There areno obituary records nor death records available on the web site forhim.
4). Charles is living in Rockville with his children, Parke Countyalong with his brother Otto. His wife has died previous to the 1910census. Charles E. Hamilton could not be found after the 1910Census.
5). Mary Hamilton is 2 years old in the 1860 census, but is not listedin the 1870 census with the rest of the children. Mary was the secondoldest child. The oldest child, Charles was still at home in 1870,and if Mary had been there with the rest of the children, she wouldhave been 12 years old. Mary was too young for marriage, so since sheis not in the 1870 census with the rest of the family, she probablyhas died. I cannot find a marriage record on her either.
6). Winifred M. Hamilton marries James M. Miller 20 Dec 1882 inPutnam County, Indiana.
7). Arizona Hamilton marries William A. Scott in 25 Feb 1886 inPutnam County, Indiana.
8). Alta Q. Hamilton marries George Proctor 10 Mar 1881 in PutnamCounty, Indiana. A son George was added by a birth record to thethree children known of in the 1900 census. Franklin Hamilton andOtto Hamilton are living with this couple in the 1900 census forRussell Township, Putnam County, Indiana.

NOTE THE SUGGESTED VERIFICATION OF THE FAMILY LINE FROM FRANKLIN &ELIZA A. ELKINS HAMILTON TO JAMES MCHAFFEY & HANNAH COCHRAN RAMSAYHAMILTON: ***The guardian records of Parke County show that on 10Nov.1846, Robert S. Hamilton was appointed guardian of (nephews andnieces) Norval, Franklin, Allen, Wallace, Warren, Mary D., and EzekielHamilton, all children of Robert's brother, John W. Hamilton, deceased. (Park County guardianship book 1)." And the Biography forRobert S. Hamilton specifically states his parents are James McHaffey& Hannah Cochran Ramsay Hamilton as well. The Biography of SamuelRamsay Hamilton also provides the same parents names plus, it alsoprovides much more information on the Hamilton Family history. So,with census records and the biographies, the line of Franklin Hamiltonhas been established here in America to his grandfather JamesMchaffey Hamilton of County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland and to hisgrandmother Hannah Cochran Ramsay Hamilton of Huntington County,Pennsylvania. ---Please refer to Norval Hamilton's biography as well.

Franklin married Eliza Aliza A. Elkins on 24 Apr 1850 in Jackson County, Indiana; Per Marriage Record, 1802-1892 & 1800-1841 Collection-Page 222. Eliza (daughter of James Elkins and Mary "Polly" A. Notes:

Eliza A. Elkins is the daughter of James & Mary Polly A. ReynoldsElkins of Kentucky & Indiana. She married Franklin Hamilton(descendant of James L. McHaffey Hamilton) on 24 April 1850 in JacksonCounty, Indiana. The couple lived in Jackson, Parke, and PutnamCounties, Indiana. It is believed that Eliza stayed with her motherthrough her young years until her marriage to Franklin Hamilton, resulting in six known children, Charles E., Mary, Winifred M., AltaQ., Arizona J., and Otto Hamilton; Even so, Mary Polly A. ReynoldsElkins Graham (Eliza's mother) stayed near the Hamilton's over theyears prior to her death, as evidenced by the census records showingher living with the Hamilton's at one time in the 1870 Federal censusin Indiana. The three families, Elkins, Grahams, and Hamilton's, wereclosely allied over the years from beginnings in Kentucky throughyears together in Indiana; even living and being buried near eachother in Russell Township, Putnam County, Indiana in Mount Pisgah &Russellville Cemeteries.
Franklin Hamilton andOtto Hamilton are living with this couple in the 1900 census forRussell Township, Putnam County, Indiana."

PLEASE NOTE: NOTE THE SUGGESTED VERIFICATION OF THE FAMILY LINE FROMFRANKLIN & ELIZA A. ELKINS HAMILTON TO JAMES MCHAFFEY & HANNAH COCHRANRAMSAY HAMILTON: ***The guardian records of Parke County show that on10 Nov.1846, Robert S. THIS MAKES JOHN W.HAMILTON'S PARENTS JAMES L. MCHAFFEY & HANNAH COCHRAN (RAMSEY RAMSAY)HAMILTON ALSO. The Biography of Samuel Ramsay Hamilton also providesthe same parents names plus, it also adds much more information on theHamilton Family history. Norval Hamilton's biography also providesthe same parents and indicates Norval and Fanklin's relationship asbrothers. 16 January 2007; Research by Compiler; To confirm that James Elkinsnor Mary (Polly) Reynolds Elkins were in the 1840 census in Kentuckyas well as not in the 1840 census in Indiana. It is believed thatJames Elkins died and Mary married James C. Graham in 1840 prior tothe completion of the 1840 census in Indiana.

I used "EXACT MATCHES" to try and find them, and the soundex on thesurname."
CONCLUSION: James Elkins died in Indiana before 1840, and Mary(Polly) Reynolds Elkins re-married to James C. Graham in November1840. William H. Elkins was raised by his half-uncle Amaziah Elkins, and Peter Elkins was living in the household of their half-uncleJoseph Elkins, Amaziah's brother; Both boys then were raised by theGrt Uncle William Elkins family. It is believed that Eliza stayedwith her mother through her young years until her marriage to FranklinHamilton; Even so, Mary Polly A. Reynolds Elkins Graham stayed nearthe Hamilton's over the years prior to her death, as evidenced by thecensus records showing her living with the Hamilton's at one time inthe 1870 Federal census, and she remained close to her son William H.Elkins as well (Mary with her sons, William H. Elkins, George F.Graham, and Aaron A. Graham are buried near each other in the samecemetery row in the Russellville Cemetery, Putnam County, Indiana, aswell as, James C. Graham). Peter Elkins is no longer listed in thecensus records after 1850. It is assumed he has passed away between1850-1860 until more information is possibly found on him to indicateotherwise. [Transcribed from the records of Joyce Lorraine Clore Elkins, copies in Elkins Records, SLJuhl, compiler, 09 Jan 2005].

In the 26 August 1850 Federal Census, page 227/114, dwelling 255/258for Salt Creek Township, Jackson County, Indiana, it was noted byJoyce Elkins in her research that there was a Peter Elkins, 15 yearsold listed with the family of Joseph & Tabitha Elkins, however withhis age, Peter Elkins could not have been a son of Joseph & TabithaElkins. Upon re-checking the census record again on www.Ancestry.comthis compiler noted the same findings, and could not find any otherindications of relationship from the original census page. It isstrongly believed by this compiler that Peter Elkins is the son ofJames & Mary Polly A. Reynolds Elkins. After James died it was notedthat his son William H. Elkins was living with Amaziah (Amayiah)Elkins, and since Joseph is Amaziah's (Amayiah) brother, it's quitepossible that James's son Peter might be living with Joseph & TabithaElkins as well during the 1850 census year. Peter Elkins disappearsin all of the census records after 1850. It is assumed that he diedyoung. SLJuhl, compiler; sljuhl1234@yahoo.com

A reason why I believe Mary A. Elkins was born in Kentucky. (1). Mom(Joyce) also noted the relationships in Jackson County of William H.Elkins and Amayiah (Amaziah) Elkins, Peter Elkins and Joseph Elkinsand the fact that Mary had left her sons with them while they weregrowing up. (2) The 1850 census for Hamilton Twp., Jackson County,IN. lists James C. Graham, Mary, and their children in the household. In the Graham household is living a certain Norval Hamilton, 26 yearsold, and a farmer, family from Kentucky. Mom (Joyce) believed him tobe a near relative, because two lines above their listing on thecensus is listed also another Hamilton who was their next doorneighbors.
As we continue to follow the census records we come to the year 1870.In Russell, Putnam County, IN. where Mary spent her last days she islisted on the census as Mary Graham living with a family of FranklinHamilton, and his children. Franklin Hamilton is only 38 years old atthis time with five children, but no wife. Mary is listed as keepinghouse. It would seem that she is helping the family at this time.It is believed that the children were those of Eliza A. Elkins, Mary'sdaughter from her marriage to James Elkins, and of course Mary'sgrandchildren. This is another reason for the strong contention thatshe is related to the Hamilton's. Next, on this very same censuspage is listed our William H. Elkins with Martha and three of thechildren including our Franklin as neighbors as well. So, this isobviously William H. Elkins' s mother Mary Polly A. Reynolds ElkinsGraham. Well, guess what? Mary Polly's birth place is listed as"Kentucky" on the c.1870 census as well. And of course, they are allburied together at the Russellville Cemetery, Russellville, RussellTownship, Putnam County, Indiana.

Mary stated in the 1870 Indiana Census that she was born in Kentucky. Her son William H. Elkins by her first marriage, who lived near her atthat time also stated that his mother was from Kentucky on the 1880census record. Since Mary "Polly's" parents were living in KnoxCounty, Kentucky when her and James Elkins were married it will beassumed until further research shows differently that she was born inKnox County, Kentucky.

NOTE: The older folks in the family said that the Elkins family werefrom VIRGINIA. This is true since there is a 1787 Census of Virginiawith Drury and his brother living in Russell County, Virginiatogether. Also, the older family members told Joyce Elkins that MaryA. Reynolds family was from Virginia, and this was stated as we knowby her son William H. Elkins death certificate. I believe thatMary's family is from Virginia, that they traveled through Tennessee, the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, and settled in Indiana eventually.I also believe it is possible that Mary was born in Kentucky, and thisis why: When census records are filled out usually the adult personin the household gives the information of their births and theirparent's births to the preparer. So, if that is the case, I believeit is quite possible that Mary herself told the preparer in the 1870Census that she was born in Kentucky since she was the oldest memberin the household of Franklin Hamilton at the time, and would have beenavailable at the home to assist with that duty of giving familyinformation to a preparer of the census.
