He was born in Bourbon County,Kentucky, Mary 17, 1797, and is the son of James and Hannah (RAMSEY)Hamilton. The former was born in Tyrone, Ireland, and came to Americain 1781. S.R. Hamilton's paternal grandfather had six sons, all ofwhom he sent to America but the youngest, who joined in the revolutionof 1688, and was forced to flee the country for his life. This oldpatriarch of liberty was a tiller of the soil. Mr. S.R. Hamilton'sgrandfather fought in the memorable battle of the Boyne, under WilliamIII, in 1690. His mother, Hannah Ramsey was born in Pa. In 1770, inHuntington County, and is the daughter of James and Mary (COCHRAN)Ramsey. His maternal great grandmother, when a hundred years old,could spin six cuts of 10 hundred flax thread or walk three miles in aday, and could read in a small pocket bible without glasses. Shelived almost to the great age of 110. Mr. Hamilton's father wasmarried in Pa. In 1793 and settled in Kentucky, where the subject ofour sketch was reared and educated in the pioneer cabins and logschoolhouse. In 1816, he came to Jefferson County, In and remainedthere until 1821 and then went back to Ohio . Remaining in Ohio twoyears, he then returned to Kentucky, and the same year was married inFleming Co to Nancy Ramsey (Ramsay), daughter of Alexander and Ann(MORE) Ramsey, whose parents were like his father, natives of Ireland.By this marriage there have been born to them 8 children, four of whomare living; Oliver A, married to Georgiana RAMSEY; Ordelia, widow ofJR REDDISH; Wallace I; Evan E and Joseph, who are unmarried and liveat home. Wallace I. Was a soldier in the late war for a period of 100days. H ahs served as county commissioner nine years and as justice ofthe peace 15 years. He began life in this county in the green woods,on 80 acres and he now has a splendid and well improved farm of 200acres, located on Sections. 24 and 25. He and his wife have beenactive church members for half a century. They were members of theAssociate Presbyterian Society, near Portland Mills, till 1859, whenthey withdrew, and with others constituted the church society calledUnited Presbyterians. In the former church he was elected to theeldership, which he filled till the organization of the latter and isnow one of the elders in the latter. His and his wife's ancestors, asfar back as he can trace them, have been strict Presbyterians.Esquire HAMILTON is the oldest man in Greene Township but one. He andhis wife are universally respected, both on account of their age andunpretending piety. Then the Article goes on: Memorial exercises were held May 30to honor a soldier of the War of 1812, Samuel Ramsey Hamilton at thePortland Mills Cemetery , near the old Seceder Presbyterian church.
Turner Harbison, a great grandson from Detroit presided. The colorguard from the Russellville Legion placed the flags and the pledge wasgiven. Rev. Ralph D Spencer of Martinsville spoke concerning GrandpaHamilton and said though he died his faith still speaks and lives. Hisancestors came from Scotland , southwest of Glasgow . They went toIreland . The National Records of Belfast, Ireland show that Samuelsfather James H Hamilton was the first one who came to America . Hisship was wrecked, but he clung to a plank and arrived in New Yorkbefore the Revolutionary War. His wife a Ramsey and their son marredNancy Ramsey. Samuel R Hamilton was born in Kentucky in 1797. While asmall boy he came with his parents to Indiana . He joined Gen. WilliamHenry Harrison's army when they went north and fought in the battleagainst the Indians at Tippecanoe River . He went on north and helprescue Detroit and on the Gen. Harrison who defeated Proctor theBritish General at the battle of the Thames, Canada . After 1812 hecame back and married Nancy Ramsey and bought eighty acres of landfrom the government near Portland Mills. He gained success in apolitical way and started a movement to improve the roads and makecovered bridges. He had four dominant characteristics: Love of family,devotion to the land and to the church and to the country.
As members of the Daughters of 1812 Miss Carrie Pierce, Miss MinnettaWright and Mrs Wm Boatright attended the unveiling of the bronzemarker. Mrs Bruce Shannon, Mrs Boatright, Mrs Evens and Mrs SarahWright also attended.

"I found the following from Britannica Encyclopedia:
"The U.S. War of Independence greatly influenced Irish politics, notleast because it removed government troops from Ireland, and theProtestant Irish volunteer corps, spontaneously formed to defend thecountry against possible French attack, exercised a coercive influencefor reform. A patriotic opposition led by Henry Flood and HenryGrattan began an agitation that led in 1782 to the repeal of theDeclaratory Act of 1720 and to an amendment of Poynings's Law to givelegislative initiative to the Irish Parliament. In this period many ofthe disadvantages suffered by Roman Catholics in Ireland wereabolished, and in 1793 the British government, seeking to win Catholicloyalty on the outbreak of war against revolutionary France, gave themthe franchise and admission to most civil offices. meaning: Perhaps, if he was very young at the time no doubt, and itseems to be a totally different statement from the previous one above. So, this may be true as far as a time line may be discerned.

meaning: PLEASE--notice the difference in spelling of HuntingtonCounty! This would also hold true for the other Ramsay children alsoprobably--it was Huntington County not Huntingdon where the familiesmay be found instead in PA. You were right on the mark with this one.

meaning: Not sure where the date came from in the biography since nosources for it are there--could James have been married previously?If he was in PA from 1781-1793, he sure could have been, right? Thatwould account for the earlier age of Mary (from first wife), and thebirth of James S. in 1793, KY--1850 & 1860 census say James S. wasborn in KY.

I was told as a child that our McHaffie ancestor was banished fromScotland. In 1986, I learned more,
then in Dobson's Directory of Scots Banished to the AmericanPlantations 1650-1775 found "John McHaffie in Gargerie. Covenanter.Banished to the plantations 17 October 1684 (PC)." Dobson's TheOriginal Scots Colonists of Early America refers to PC10.612, volumeand page from the Register of the Privy Council. Gargrie, with ruinsof stone house, etc., is on a strip of land between Castle Loch andLoch Mochrum, Wigtownshire. John McHaffie in Gargerie/Gargrie was atBothwell Bridge 1679, captured 1684, in Canongate, 1685, per PC pages. Thomas McHaffie, a Covenanter, slain in 1685, was son of John in theLargs Farm, Straiton, and is buried in the Straiton churchyard,Ayrshire, per Thomson's Martyr Graves of Scotland, and has twotombstones, with year shown as 1686.
Fairbairn's Book of Crests of the Families of Great Britain andIreland, p. 363, lists: M'Haffie, Scotland, a demi-griffon, gules(crest); and also, M'Haffie, George William Gordon, Esquire, crest ademi-savage. (George, an only son, owned Corsmalzie estate inWigtownshire, and in 1882 changed his name to George WilliamMcHaffie-Gordon, Lyon Register XI, and also in a London newspaper)."
