    He was a British poet
Nugent Dunbar inherited the entailed estate at Machermore from his father in 1846. He married Annette Ellen Singleton-Atcheson in 1856 and left four young children upon his death. He in turn left it to his eldest son, Robert Lennox Nugent Dunbar (born 1863), held in trust by his son's tutors, with instructions to provide income to his widow and other surviving children, Ellen Catherine, Annette Roberta and Charlotte Mary Emily (who married James Burns, 3rd Baron Inverclyde). However, the estate failed to pay, and in 1872, his widow and three younger children successfully sued Robert Lennox Nugent Dunbar (still then a minor) and his trustees for back payment and interest.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Major Robert Skerret (of Machermore) Nugent-Dunbar (son of Oliver Nugent and Elizabeth Dunbar); died in 1846.

    Notes:

(Research):An action of count, reckoning, and payment was raised by Mrs Dunbar, as guardian, and her three daughters, against Robert Lennox Nugent Dunbar of Machermoro, Kirkcudbrightshire, a minor, and the tutors appointed by hisfather. The estate of Machermore was entailed, in terms of a disposition and deed of tailzie registered July 22, 1762. By bond of provision, dated 27tli February 1843, and recorded in the Books of Council and Session 11th May 1846, the late Robert Nugent Dunbar, the elder, grandfather of the defender, then of Machermore, bound and obliged himself, and the heirs succeeding to him in the lands and estate of Machermore, and subsidiaries bis heirs and successors whomsoever, to pay to his younger children Antoinetta Nugent Dunbar, William Nugent Dunbar, Catherine Nugent Dunbar, and Arthur Nugent Dunbar, the principal sum of ?2500 sterling, equally amongst them, and that at and against the first term of Whitsunday or Martinmas that should happen one year after his death, with penalty and interest as therein mentioned. This provision was made under the 5 Geo. IV. c. 87. Robert Nugent Dunbar, the elder, died March 20, 1846, and was succeeded by the now also deceased Robert Nugent Dunbar, the younger, the father of the defender Robert Lennox Nugent Dunbar, now of Machermore. He was survived by his four younger children. Robert Nugent Dunbar, the younger, granted on 11th May 1847 a

disposition in security over Machermore to his brothers and sisters, for the sum of ?2283, 12s., being the three years' free rents, to which under the statute the provision was restricted. Of this sum ?1141, 16s., or one-half, was paid off in 1863, leaving the remaining half, being the shares of the two sisters, still as a debt over the estate.

Robert Nugent Dunbar was married to Mrs Annette Ellen Atcheson or Nugent Dunbar on 9th July 1856. Four children, the issue of the marriage, now survive. A prennptial contract of marriage was entered into between the parties, by which Robert Nugent Dunbar bound and obliged himself, and the whole heirs of entail succeeding to him in the entailed estate of Machermore, and subsidiaries his heirs, executors, and successors whomsoever, to make payment of the following provisions to the child or children of his said marriage who should be alive at his death, and should not succeed to the said entailed lands and estate? viz., If one such child, a sum equal to one year's free rent or value of the said entailed lands and estate of Machermore and others, as the same should be at the date of the death of the said Robert Nugent Dunbar; if two such children, the sum of ?1000 sterling between them; "and if three or more such children, a sum among them equal to two years' rent or value of the said entailed lands and estate of Machermore and others, ami as the same shall be at the death of the said Robert Nugent Dunbar." It was also specially provided that the provisions in favour of the younger children should bear interest from' the day of the death of their father, and be payable one year thereafter. Robert Nugent Dunbar, the younger, died on 25th July 1866, and the security over the entailed estate created by the disposition in security executed by him for behoof of bis sisters, was thereby extinguished. Antoinetta and Catherine Nugent Dunbar are taking the necessary proceedings, uuder the Aberdeen Act. to recover payment of their provisions. The only question as to which the parties were not agreed in this case was? Whether in ascertaining the sum to which the pursuers are entitled, not only the ?1141, 16s., being the amount remaining undischarged of a provision made by the grandfather of the defender, a former proprietor of the estate, for his children, must be deducted from the three years' free rental of the estate, but also, as contended for by the defender, whether the interest of that sum should not be deducted in estimating the free annual rental?

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Oliver Nugent (son of Captain Walter Nugent and Antoinetta de Roux); died in 1797 in Canada.

    Notes:

Oliver, last of the Nugents of Drumcree. In 1687, Oliver had married his cousin, Jane, daughter of Christopher Nugent of Dardistown, eldest son of Francis Nugent of Dardistown, Co. Westmeath, who was the second son of Sir Thomas Nugent Bart of Moyrath. Oliver survived the battle (of the Boyne, 1690), where many Nugents perished - 16 according to one account - but his estates in County Westmeath were forfeited. King William III subsequently published an amnesty but Oliver did not submit within the prescribed time, and Drumcree passed into the possession of Mr Smyth. Oliver became a Major General in the French army and died at St Germains in France.
According to the family pedigree, the only son of the marriage was Walter, and there was a daughter, Jane, who died unmarried. Walter, our ancestor, became a captain in the Imperial service, and married Elinor, daughter of James Cusack of Flinstown, Co. Westmeath. Their only son, also called Walter, travelled to Liverpool where he "freighted a vessel with his own merchandise?. going himself in the ship to dispose of her cargo at Antigua."

Of Oliver's children, only Robert, the eldest child of his first marriage, and Nicholas, the eldest child of his second marriage, had any offspring of their own. Robert added Dunbar to his surname, becoming Robert Nugent-Dunbar, apparently as a condition to inherit lands from his mother at Marchermore, Kircudbrightshire, south west Scotland.

The Nugent succession passed to Oliver's son, Nicholas.

Oliver Nugent's first born son, Robert (by Elizabeth Dunbar) inherited lands from his mother at Marchermore, Kircudbrightshire, south west Scotland, agreeing to change his name to Nugent-Dunbar. Oliver's second son, Nicholas (by Bridget Lynch) became a doctor and lived most of his life in Antigua, becoming Speaker of the Assembly. In 1829 he bought or inherited back the 'Nugent/Skerrett' estates from his cousin, John Lynch, Antoinetta Skerrett's nephew.

At the time of emancipation in 1834, Nicholas managed 'Lyon's' estate in the east of the island (north of Willoughby Bay, west of Nonsuch Bay) and lived there whilst evidently owning 'Skerretts'. Later he lived at Merrywing Hall, whose location is unknown.

His son, the future Sir Oliver Nugent, spent his early married life at 'Betty's Hope', an estate in the middle of the island owned by the Codrington family. In 1860 Sir Oliver acquired 'Millar's' estate, close to Fitches Creek, living on the estate and managing its substantial sugar production. Named for Dr William Millar, of Paisley, Renfrewshire, 'Millar's' consisted of 406 acres in 1829 and 929 acres by 1921. Despite never having converted to steam, in 1836 it recorded the largest production of sugar in the whole island. In 1891 the estate passed to Sir Oliver's son-in-law, Sir Charles Cameron Lees (husband of Maria Nugent) who was previously Governor of the Leeward Islands. Later it was acquired by the Comacho family, and was leased to the United States air force as an officers' club during the Second World War. If any remains still exist they are within the perimeter fence of Antigua's 1950s-built airport.

In 1891 Sir Oliver and Lady Nugent acquired 'Skerret's and Folly', previously owned by his father, who had died in 1843 - probably part of the land originally acquired by Walter Nugent around 1720. At some stage Sir Oliver, or perhaps Lady Nugent, gave or sold plots from 'Skerret's and Folly' for good causes, including a home for truant boys and a cemetery for the poor. The land on which stand Antigua Grammar School, the old and new Parliament buildings and Holberton Hospital are all thought to have been owned by the Nugents at this time. Clare Hall, though, was no longer in Nugent hands having passed to Charles Warner Dunbar in 1790 and later to Sir C Bethel Codrington. It is now the site of a school of that name and a model housing complex.

Oliver married Elizabeth Dunbar in 1759. Elizabeth (daughter of William (of Machermore) Dunbar and Barbara Warner) was born about 1741; was christened in 1741; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Grandfather of Thomas Henry Lister, author of Granby

Lister was returned for Clitheroe on the death of his brother, to hold the seat during his nephew's minority. There is no record of his having spoken or voted during his twelve years in Parliament. He was classed as a Tory by Bute, December 1761; Rockingham, November 1766; and Newcastle, 2 Mar. 1767. Jenkinson in the autumn of 1763 described him as 'pro', and as an 'absent friend' over general warrants, 18 Feb. 1764. He appears in both Robinson's surveys on the royal marriage bill, March 1772, as 'doubtful, absent'. In March 1773 his nephew, Thomas Lister, came of age, and Lister immediately vacated his seat.

Nathaniel married Martha Fletcher about 1753. Martha (daughter of John (of Litchfield) Fletcher) died in Dec 1811. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
