    In 1565 he was excused by Queen Mary and Lord Darnley from attending their army 'ost' (assembly of landowners and their followers summoned by the sovereign(s) for military service), because of his minority, and from attending the wars all his life for the good service of his predecessors. In 1566 he was granted the hereditary Provostship of Inverkeithing
