Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Captain Henry Sholto Douglas, DL was born about 1821; was christened before 1846 (son of Maj Gen Sir William (11th of Timpendean and of Bonjedward) Douglas, KCH and Marrianne Tattersall); died in 1892.

    Notes:

    He was 60 in 1881

at one time of Bitterne, Southampton, England and of Moorlands, 'formerly of Bonjedward and Timpendean'

He succeeded to 'Bonjedward and Timpendean' on the death of his brother George in 1865, but by then the last of the land had been sold.

In June 1843 he was stationed in Malta, a Lt, with the 1st battalion of the 42nd (The Royal Highland) Regiment.

He was a magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire in 1881, where he lived at Claybrooks Hall, where several of his children were born.

Daughter, Helen, born in Canada where her father was serving in the army.

Mitchell (d. 1728) was succeeded by his son William Mitchell of Hemingford Greys (Hunts.) (d. 1745). William's three sons William (d. c. 1764), James (d. 1768), and Knight (d. 1798) inherited the manor in turn. Knight was probably succeeded by Knight George Coote Mitchell (fl. 1801), and the Revd. James Mitchell held Fowlmere in 1820 and at his death in 1838. ( His daughters and heirs Mary, wife of Capt. Henry Sholto Douglas, and Anne were allotted over 1,350 a. in Fowlmere in 1845. In 1862 Anne was found to be of unsound mind; Douglas was made committee of her estate, and in 1867 his and his wife's title to the whole Fowlmere estate was registered. In that year the estate was sold to Henry Perkins of Thriplow, who immediately resold much of the land to John Mortlock of Melbourn and William Nash Woodham of Shepreth. By 1871 Mrs. Nash Woodham's son Frederick M. Beldam-Johns owned his stepfather's estate, as he did until his death in 1919 when it was sold to J. M. Coleman. Capt. Douglas had however retained the lordship of Fowlmere manor, and he was succeeded in it in 1892 by his son Lieut.-Col. H. M. S. Douglas (fl. 1932). ( Lieut. H. J. S. Douglas was lord in 1934.

In 1877 the joint owners of the manorial rights (Hemmingford Grey)were Miss Mitchell and Capt. Douglas in right of his wife, Miss Mitchell's sister. Capt. Douglas died in 1892 and was succeeded by his son Lieut.-Col. Sholto Douglas, the present [1932] lord of the manor.

William, 9th of Timpendean may have been his father. I have still to confirm this.

A reference to 'both his brothers', written in relation to Maj Gen Sir William Douglas, indicates that two of Archibald's sons had died by 1850, 'in service' with the army. The third probably died young.
