William Howard Sharp Sr. as written by Helen Agnes Sharp Leeds Marlin
The first thing I remember being told about my father was that as a
young man he was offered a job on a K.C. baseball team as a pitcher, but
couldn't pass a physical as he had a hernia.
I was born on a farm some where between the Jesse James farm and
Tryst Falls.
The next thing I heard about, we lived near Lathrop where Lawrence was
born.
Daddy couldn't get in the Army during World Was I on account of the
hernia. He boarded Gov't mules for the Army [at] Lathrop.
Then we moved to the Rain's Farm near Liberty where Violet was born.
There daddy went into partnership with the Jackson Bros, Oran and Leo.
They were in the horse racing business. We owned a sulky race horse
named Ole Pat who raced at the old race track in south Excelsior Springs.
near Excelsior Springs High School. We then moved to Nebo Hill near
Liberty.
I was told that daddy lost money in 1922. We lived on the James Harvey
Sharp farm south of Excelsior Springs near Greenwood School. Daddy
hauled apples out of the Mo river bottoms in a lumber wagon (Hedspeth
farms, I think) to KC Mo and broke horses to ride and to harness. He did
that for several years. Then we moved to the Douglas farm west of town
(Ex. Spgs) where he went to work for Claud Neise as a blacksmith. He
then went to work for McDavid Bros. as a car mechanic. George Allen
was born in 1927. Next he went to work for McDavid's as a truck driver
hauling new cars from Detroit Mich.
After that he drove a truck locally for Al Roberts. In about1932 he
started the truck farming business.
His first grocery store was in the last house on the left side of Isley
going east. [This is probably the house that was Hill's Store, next to the
plastic factory. bp] The next one was a few blocks west of there [next
door to 618 Isley (Grandma Hof's) in the house Buck McGinnis owned.bp]
and the last one was by the bridge on Isley.
William married Mary Ella McMillen on 7 Apr 1939 in Platte, Missouri, USA. Mary (daughter of George Earnest McMillen and Lena Belle Coleman) was born on 17 Sep 1915 in Plattsburg, Clinton Co, MO; died on 27 Oct 1985 in Jackson Co, MO. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
