"WILLIAM H. ELKINS: ONLY CHILD KNOWN OF (FATHER) {We now know JamesElkins was his father} AND MARY (Polly) A. REYNOLDS ELKINS, laterGraham. William H. Elkins, born in Jackson County, Indiana, (CivilWar Record) on March 01, 1836. We find him in the 1850 Jackson Co.,IN. Census living with the Amayiah Elkins family and next door toWilliam Elkins (first settler in what is now Brown County, Indiana).Amayiah is believed to be the son of William Elkins. Our William H.Elkins is not a son of Amayiah Elkins, but he was possibly living withhis Uncle Amayiah (See census records kept in the ElkinsVolumes)(Note: Confirmed that William H. Elkins was living in AmayiahElkins household in 1850 census, SLJuhl.) He was not found in thehousehold of his mother and step-father James C. Graham in 1850. Nonames are mentioned except head of household in the 1840 census, sohave been unable to locate them. Possibly living with other families. Seems likely that William H. Elkins married about age 17/19 as hisfirst child was born in 1855. No record of marriage (to Margaret) hasbeen found, (Update, found record of marriage of Margaret Cavender toWilliam H. They were living in Jackson Co., Hamilton Twp. in 1860'sCensus record. Margaret died (no grave found) between 1861 and 1869in Jackson County or Putman County, Indiana. Note: In the 1870 censusthe family was in Putnam Co., IN. WILLIAM H. ELKINS, enlisted in theCivil War at Terre Haute, IN. on January 23, 1865 and was dischargedas a Corpl. on July 15, 1865. Was in the hospital in Huntsville,Alabama in May of that year and finally succeeded in getting a pension(due to chronic Malaria). His records state that he was born inJackson Co., IN. and that at the time of his enlistment he resided inPutman Co., IN. Heleaves a son and three daughters. The deceased was a retired farmer.He suffered his first attack a year ago while visiting his daughterhere. The funeral party will leave here Friday morning and go to thehome of Mr. Todd, another son- in law who resides a mile east ofRussellville, where the funeral will be conducted at 10 o'clock byRev. J. In the updated 1830 U.S. Federal Census for Driftwood Township,Jackson County, Indiana, page 440, obtained from www.Ancestry.com on01 Dec 2006, and reviewed 14 Jan 2008 by this compiler, not only areJames Elkins, James C. Graham, Wm. Runnels (Reynolds), and JonathanGraham listed on the same page as neighbors, but Wm. Runnels(Reynolds) and James Elkins are listed the one directly under theother as heads of families and direct neighbors; Wm. Runnels isdirectly listed above James Elkins and James C. Graham is listed 10households above both of them.
1). Wm Runnels = 1 male 10-15 yrs, 1 male 15-20 yrs, 1 male 50-60 yrs(Wm. Runnels); 1 female 5-10 yrs, 1 female 15-20 yrs, 1 female 40-50yrs (this may or may not be Abigail)

It is believed thatJames Elkins died and Mary married James C. Graham in 1840 prior tothe completion of the 1840 census in Indiana.

There is only one James Elkins listed in Kentucky 1840 census and heis in Pike County, age 30-40 with 3 younger males and 1 female 30-40with 5 younger females.
Doubtful this is them, because there are too many children.
**There is no Mary Elkins listed in the 1840 Census for Kentucky, norin Whitley, Pulaski or any other county in Kentucky. 1840-Census:No James Elkins is listed in the state of Indiana."

Peter Elkins is no longer listed in thecensus records after 1850. It is assumed he has passed away between1850-1860 until more information is possibly found on him to indicateotherwise. In the 26 August 1850 Federal Census, page 227/114, dwelling 255/258for Salt Creek Township, Jackson County, Indiana, it was noted byJoyce Elkins in her research that there was a Peter Elkins, 15 yearsold listed with the family of Joseph & Tabitha Elkins, however withhis age, Peter Elkins could not have been a son of Joseph & TabithaElkins. Upon re-checking the census record again on www.Ancestry.comthis compiler noted the same findings, and could not find any otherindications of relationship from the original census page. It isstrongly believed by this compiler that Peter Elkins is the son ofJames & Mary Polly A. Reynolds Elkins. After James died it was notedthat his son William H. Elkins was living with Amaziah (Amayiah)Elkins, and since Joseph is Amaziah's (Amayiah) brother, it's quitepossible that James's son Peter might be living with Joseph & TabithaElkins as well during the 1850 census year. A reason why I believe Mary A. Elkins was born in Kentucky. (1). Mom(Joyce) also noted the relationships in Jackson County of William H.Elkins and Amayiah (Amaziah) Elkins, Peter Elkins and Joseph Elkinsand the fact that Mary had left her sons with them while they weregrowing up. (2) The 1850 census for Hamilton Twp., Jackson County,IN. lists James C. Graham, Mary, and their children in the household.In the Graham household is living a certain Norval Hamilton, 26 yearsold, and a farmer, family from Kentucky. Mom (Joyce) believed him tobe a near relative, because two lines above their listing on thecensus is listed also another Hamilton who was their next doorneighbors.
As we continue to follow the census records we come to the year 1870.In Russell, Putnam County, IN. where Mary spent her last days she islisted on the census as Mary Graham living with a family of FranklinHamilton, and his children. Franklin Hamilton is only 38 years old atthis time with five children, but no wife. Mary is listed as keepinghouse. It would seem that she is helping the family at this time.It is believed that the children were those of Eliza A. Elkins, Mary'sdaughter from her marriage to James Elkins, and of course Mary'sgrandchildren. This is another reason for the strong contention thatshe is related to the Hamilton's. Next, on this very same censuspage is listed our William H. Elkins with Martha and three of thechildren including our Franklin as neighbors as well. So, this isobviously William H. Elkins' s mother Mary Polly A. Reynolds ElkinsGraham. Well, guess what? Mary Polly's birth place is listed as"Kentucky" on the c.1870 census as well. And of course, they are allburied together at the Russellville Cemetery, Russellville, RussellTownship, Putnam County, Indiana.

Mary stated in the 1870 Indiana Census that she was born in Kentucky.Her son William H. Elkins by her first marriage, who lived near her atthat time also stated that his mother was from Kentucky on the 1880census record. Since Mary "Polly's" parents were living in KnoxCounty, Kentucky when her and James Elkins were married it will beassumed until further research shows differently that she was born inKnox County, Kentucky.

NOTE: The older folks in the family said that the Elkins family werefrom VIRGINIA. This is true since there is a 1787 Census of Virginiawith Drury and his brother living in Russell County, Virginiatogether. Also, the older family members told Joyce Elkins that MaryA. Reynolds family was from Virginia, and this was stated as we knowby her son William H. Elkins death certificate. I believe thatMary's family is from Virginia, that they traveled through Tennessee,the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, and settled in Indiana eventually.I also believe it is possible that Mary was born in Kentucky, and thisis why: When census records are filled out usually the adult personin the household gives the information of their births and theirparent's births to the preparer. So, if that is the case, I believeit is quite possible that Mary herself told the preparer in the 1870Census that she was born in Kentucky since she was the oldest memberin the household of Franklin Hamilton at the time, and would have beenavailable at the home to assist with that duty of giving familyinformation to a preparer of the census.

In the 1880 census for Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana, WilliamH. Elkins stated that both of his parents were born in Kentucky.This agrees with the 1870 census where Mary stated that she was bornin Kentucky as well.

George returned to Kentucky and mar (2) 20Jan 1846 in Hardin county, Eliza Irwin, widow, b about 1806 inKentucky. the family was still living there when the 1850 census wastaken. they later returned to Indiana where they lived with dau Nancynear the town of Raccoon in Franklin Township, Putnam county, whereGeorge d June 1879. He was bur in the Skillman Cemetery a shortdistance to the south in Russell Township, where his grave is markedwith a fieldstone. Grandson William T.S.
