Note: "William Henderson considered the Emigrant of this line.Arrived inYork County Virginia. and settled in New Kent CountyVirginia. about 1660.New K ent thenbecame King and Queen CountyVirginia. where this WilliamHender son resided onthe North side of thePamunkey River which later became King William County Virginia. in1702. This William Henderson wasof the firm of Henderson and Forster[Nugent Page 530]. He lived on the Mattapony R iver in 1666. TheQuitRent List of King and Queen County,Virginia. for 1704 shows only hiswidow "Widow Henderson" and sons John and William. Mr. Ray inTennessee Cousins states that he believes the wife of this William wasnamed Florence.William was already a resident of New Kent CountyVirginia. when Ralph Massie settled beside him in Sept. 1665. WhenHanover County was cut from New KentCounty,Virginia. in 1691, theHendersons then resided in that county. This William Henderson was ofthe firm of Henderson and Forster [Nugent p.530]. The records showthat the Hendersons were long lived, andwasevi dently elderly in 1666.He probably died in King and Queen Countyabout1 704 not far from"Williams Ferry" run by members of the family on the Pamunky River, near the Indian reservation of that name. The only Hendersons toremain in this area were the descendants of Thomas Hendrson, whoappears to have been the "carpenter," before making up his mind tobecome a lawyer, according to Wheeler's HistoryofNorthCarolina.Research notes of James Henderson of 727 WestoverAve., Norfolk,Virginia.23507-1622 from 1991: "William Claiborne, whofirst settled in Maryland but got run out, and resettled in what isnow New Kent County --which he named. He and a fellow named John Westwere the folks who initially broke the hold on the Pamunkey Neck land, with large tracts where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers meet to formthe York River. That helped to stir the last Indian uprising in theeast part of Virginia in1644, which Claiborne got to put down. His sonalso William was the one who settled Michael Waldrop in Virginia in1682. And one of his neighbors on the Mattaponi for about 30 years wasone William Henderson [whose connections I have not yet made]... LordBaltimore got a grant forthe whole state [including New Kent Islandacross the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis in Maryland] and ran WilliamClaiborne [Sr.] off... and the Hendersons may have gone with him toVirginia when he had to scoot."
