    Notes:

"General Thomas Posey was born in Fairfax County not far from Fredericksburg, July 9, 1950. Certain it is, however, that Fredericksburg was his Home Town as much so as it was Washington's Home Town. It is not certain in what year of his age did young Posey live in Fredericksburg. It is certain, however, that he was a Fredericksburger, and the records of the Masonic Lodge here show that he was a member of the Lodge at the same time that Washington...was..., and also in later years was fellow vestryman of Pohick Church with George Washington.

"He had served in Lord Dunmore's Shawnee expedition and fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant. In 1775 he was a member of the Virginia Committee of Correspondence, commanded a company of the Seventh Virginia Regiment; joined Washington's Army in New Jersey in 1777, where his company was transferred to Morgan's riflemen; fought in the battles of Bemis Heights and Stillwater; was Major of Second Virginia Regiment at Monmouth; in 1778 was transferred to Seventh Virginia Regiment; was Lieutenant Colonel in 1782 and transferred to First Virginia Regiment in 1783 and later was Brigadier General of the United States Army. He resigned February 28, 1794.

"General Posey led an expedition against the Indians after the Massacre of Wyoming. At Stony Point he received the arms of the British officer and was at the surrender of Yorktown October 19, 1781.

"In his later years he removed to Kentucky, was State Senator several times, and speaker 1806. He was also Lieutenant Governor.

"When war was threatened in 1809 he was commissioned Major General and organized the Kentucky Volunteers.

"Later he removed to Louisiana and became United States Senator; was Governor of Indiana Territory, 1813-16; was defeated for Governor when Indiana became a State; from 1816-18 was Indian Agent at Shawneetown, Illinois, where he died March 19, 1818."
