6. | Capt William Douglas was born before 1750 (son of Hugh (of Garrallan) Douglas and Katherine (Catherine?) Hume); died in 1783. Notes:
William Douglas emigrated to Loudon CO VA, ca. 1750 from Ayr, Scotland. He and Elizabeth were married before 1761. He was a prosperous landholder, Justice, Sheriff and supporter of the American Revolution. His Scots ancestry and descendents are documented in Col. John Wise of England and Virginia (1617-1695) by C. Jennings Wise. He owned "the handsome estates of "Garrallan" and "Montressor" in Loudoun CO, the former lying along the Potomac River north of Leesburg. His second marriage was to Sarah Orrick, widow of William Chilton (d. 1782); they had one son, Patrick Hume Douglas.
Elizabeth Offutt was the widow of Stephen Lewis of Fairfax Co, Va. They had five children: Elizabeth (1747-) m. Patterson; Thomas (1749-) m. Elizabeth Payne 1773; Jane (1752-) m. William Neilson of Scotland; Sally, m. Dr. Shrope, and Elizabeth, m. Smith. She was the daughter of Samuel Owen Offutt (18/10//1710 Berkeley Co-1761) and Elizabeth Hite (1/13/1715-). Wise says he is the son of Nathaniel Offutt and gives his birth date as 1710 (the same year his son is born!). He is said to be the son of William Offutt of Montgomery CO who patented land called the "Younger Brother" in Prince George CO, and Mary Brock, daughter of Edward Brock of "Brock Hall."
William Douglass' executors gave bond for 10,000 pounds. His will (written 1780) mentions five daughters and two sons. Nance was left "five hundred Pounds Current money and her Second Choise of my horses & Mares for a Riding Creature for herself a Womans new Saddle and Bridle and a feather Bed and furniture the horse saddle and Bridge to be paid immediately after my Death & the money As soon as she Arrives at the Age of Eighteen or immediately after her marriage if She Shold marry Sooner." He divides his father's inheritance (if it can be obtained from England) between his children. On 9/24/1782, after his wife's death, he added "the Negroe Wench Molly I Leave her to be Sett free for the Good Services she has done me since I have been sick." He purchased the rank of Captain from William Fitzhugh at Fort Pitt.
The Douglas motto is Fortis et Fidelis; the crest is a heart proper; and the ancient Douglas coat of arms is, Argent, a heart imperially crowned ppr. between two buckles azure, all within a bordue gules; on a chief of the third three stars of the field.
William married Elizabeth Offutt before 1761. Elizabeth (daughter of Samuel Owen Offutt and Elizabeth Hite) was born before 1761; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

William Offutt is the patriarch of the Offutt's in America. William married Mary Brock in 1695. Mary was the daughter of Captain Edward Brock who emigrated to Calvert County, Maryland from Ireland before 1672. By the time William Offutt began to acquire large tracts of land in Maryland, William of Orange, a Presbyterian had become king of England, and for a time the Presbyterian Church was the church of England until his reign ended. As loyalist to the Crown of England, William and Mary Offutt were members of the Presbyterian Church and their son Edward deeded land in order to establish a Presbyterian Church in Maryland.
