Generation: 2

  1. 2.  *John William Blair was born on 5 Oct 1823 in County Antrim, Ulster, Ireland; To America (son of *James Belfast Merville Blair and *Ann Stuart); died between 1870 and 1880 in Millville, Cumberland County, New Jersey; was buried between 1870 and 1880 in Probably Mellville, Cumberland County, New Jersey.

    Notes:

A). John Sr. Blair did make the voyage to America it would seem withhis mother and siblings as per Annie Love Blair's notes of January1894. It would be appropriate also to assume here that since JohnSr.'s father had died on the voyage to America that his mother had ayoung family to support upon their arrival to America. It is alsolikely that John Sr. and his family lived near the Love family inPennsylvania as well at least a portion of the time since he and ElizaLove met and married there.
B). In the 1870 Federal census records, John B. was living with hisfather John Sr. after his mother's death in 1868. According to thecensus for John Sr. the value of his property was $2500.00, and hispersonal estate was of $600.00. This is no little means at this timein the economics of America. John Sr. was listed as working in afoundry for the 1870 census. It does not state if he was a laboureror a supervisor or a metal worker. The census does clear up one thingthough, since he was the only adult listed, he told the census takerthat he was born in Ireland, not Pennsylvania. Anne is now livingwith her grandmother Mary A. Love and her uncle Alexander Love inBucks County, Pennsylvania per the census records also.
C). It is unknown as to why the children, John B., and Anna, went tolive with their uncle Alexander Love in Henry County, Illinois by the1880 Census record. And as far as to what may have become of JohnSr., all we know at present about him is that he had a paralysis whenhe died with an unknown cause or history. How long he suffered withthe paralysis prior to his death is unknown.

PLEASE NOTE: Using the birth year and place of birth from the 1850Federal Census listed above, Ann is not found in the 1870 nor in the1880 Federal Census nation wide in the United States. It will beassumed then that Ann has died before c.1870 A.D. unless moreinformation should surface to change that assumption. Her last knownresidence will then be given as her death place as well.

"Aunt Bessie" as she was lovinglyreferred to was notably the family historian. She faithfully keptnewspaper articles on the family as it grew in Illinois, and kept handwritten copied records as well of the families history from the olderdescendants. A good example would be from Annie Love Blair's notes ofJanuary 1894. And even though the earlier records are sketchy, they doprovide a good basic foundation for family research. Copies of therecords are kept in the Blair Records of Jozett Marie Blair McCoy, adirect descendant.

    "LOVE FAMILY
The "Loves" were a sept., i.e. associated with, the Clan MacKinnon(MacFhionghuin in Gaelic) which held lands on the islands of Mull andSkye off the west coast of Scotland.
The MacKinnon?s claim descent from the same royal line of King Alpineas do the MacGregor?s.
The MacKinnon?s were ("out" in 1715 and again in 1745 in support ofthe Stuart pretenders to the throne of England. On April 16, 1746 theclans were defeated disastrously on the field of Culloden, in thenortheast part of Scotland, by the English, and the clan system cameto an end. Their chief, although old and infirm, was imprisoned inLondon, but was permitted in 1747 to go home. His son, Charles, hadto part with the family estates after they had been in the clanpossession for over four centuries. This may have been the cause ofemigration to Ireland.
The motto of the MacKinnon?s is "Audentes Fortuna Juvat"--FortuneAssists the Daring--their war cry is "Cuimhnich bas Ailpein"--Rememberthe Death of Alpine. MacFhionghuin is Gaelic for "Son of the FairBorn". This was made for Edna Pearce Simpson by Emerson MacGregorDuerr, 262 Myrtle Ave., Elmhurst, Ill." Per the notes of Edna MildredGrant Fiosne. 7. 14.  Duncan was born about 1780 in Scotland; died before 1848 in Ireland.

    Notes:

Mr. Duncan was a Scottish Farmer. The family moved to NorthernIreland on account of religious persecution. He was a ProtestantPresbyterian. [See Mary Love Gerrity's notes.]
The ousting of many from England and Scotland was occurring frequentlyto many Protestants who lived in those countries, because of KingJames's edicts. Many only stayed one generation in Ireland (if thatlong even) before moving on to America. In North America they weretermed, "Scotch-Irish", although many who were Scottish and heard theterm became upset with it primarily because most of those of Scottishdescent did not inter-marry with the Island Irish. The Scotlandpeoples remained apart from the Irish in Ireland if they remained. There was and still is great animosity between the two sets ofpeoples. So much so that civil strife broke out often between them inIreland. The Scots kept to the North of the Irish Island, and theIrish inhabitants who were forced to give up their land to theseinvaders kept to the South. The Irish did rebell against the Scottishfolks and would not inter-marry with them either. Much of thisanimosity still exists in Belfast, Ireland today in the 21st centurymore than 200 years later between the Irish Catholics and the ScottishProtestants. There are many sources on this topic, and it does makefor very educational reading.
It is also known that the greatest bulk of George Washington's armywas Scotch-Irish, and Mr. Washington states in his memoirs veryspecifically about the Scotch-Irish bravey and tenacity in battle, andhow without them, America may not exist today as it does. If you havean opportunity to read about this you will certainly enjoy it, becauseit is not something that is taught in history books at schools as muchas it should be. By the way, most of the signers of The DeclarationOf Independence were of Scotch-Irish Descent. [SLJuhl, 06 Mar 2006]
