?SOUTH MOLINE Mrs. Margaret Bowden died this morning ather home on Twenty-fifth avenue after an illness of several weeks of acomplication of disease. She was born in Indiana, Oct. 29, 1832 andwhen one year of age came to Rock Island with her parents. She hadlived the greater part of her life in Moline and South Moline. Shewas the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. (John) Finley Griffin of SouthMoline. The deceased had been married three times surviving all herhusband?s (Joseph Dopler, Peter Baker, Phillip Bowden). She leavesfour daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Martha) Smith, Mrs. (Maverick) MariaPosten, Miss Pricilla (Pruella) Baker, Mr. Eliott (Elliott & Lily DellPark) Parks and one son Oliver (Lucy) Dopler two daughters, Maggia(Margaret) and Bertha Dopler are deceased. She also leaves nineteengrandchildren five brothers, George (Pricilla) Griffin, Asbury (Sarah)Griffin, John (Jane) Griffin, Will (William & Augustina) Griffin,Riley Griffin and two sisters, Mrs. Gard Hunters (Nathaniel GardnerHunter & Sarah Jane) and Mrs. Harris (Barbara Ann) Hunter (HiramHunter) are also living. Excerpts from thenarratives: Page 1: "Six days from now, July 24th, will mark the onehundred sixty fourth anniversary of the date young Jane Giles marriedJohn Finley Griffin in Pekin, Washington County, Indiana. No oneknows now whether or not they were admonished by the preacher to "goforth and multiply", but forth they went and multiply they mostcertainly did. We have only pieces of their story. They didn't writein diarys (diaries) or keep journals for future generations. Theysimply lived their lives as best they could and left it up to thedoggedness and ingenuity of those who came after to search andconjecture. The following pages contain thumbnail sketches of themand the people they came from. These stories are not complete norwill they ever be (perhaps), but the joy for those who search lies inthe discovery of small bits and pieces of information to add to thewhole. Page 3: THE GRIFFIN LINE - JOHN FINLEY GRIFFIN, was born inNC in 1805 (according to census records), but we have no definiteproof as to the exact area of his birth nor the names of his parents. If they followed the old country habit of naming children ( etc...),his parents may have been William and Margaret (much conjecture isstated here)...etc. The Griffins may have lived near the Giles familyin Randolph County, NC, because Finley (as he was called), along withbrothers Robert and George, appeared in Washington County, IN, aboutthe time the Giles' moved there. He married Jane Giles in Pekin inthat county in 1828 when he was 23 and she was 18. they settled in ornear Pekin where her grandfather William Bowman was a majorlandholder. Their first three children, Marth, William and Margaret,were born there.
In 1833, the young family, along with Finley's brother George andJane's sister and brother-in-law, Polly and William Porter, moved tothe Moline area which had been opened up for settlement by thegovernment after the defeat of Black Hawk and his followers. Finley'sfirst land purchase was from the government in 18334, a 400 acretract, paying about one dollar an acre. He sold it the following yearfor ten dollars an acre. this tract was located where sixteenthstreet runs today, south from 23rd (Avenue of the Cities) Avenue and awidth of several blocks on either side. This area was later known asStewartville and was and is home to some of our Park relatives.
Finley discovered coal on the south face of the Moline bluffs,overlooking the Rock River, and opened what was then the second coalmine in the area. This along with farming, became the business andmainstay of his and James's growing family. The home site in Coaltown was located just south and a little west of the present JohnDeere Administration Center, according to the Hunter genealogy,written by Allyn Hunter.
By the time the Rock Island County census was taken in 1855, Finley atage 50 was a man of property and substance. His and Jane's childrennumbered ten and were beginning to be married, five of them toHunters. Life for that time must have been good. However, on 6January 1860, at the age of 55, John Finley Griffin died. He left awife who, unable to read or write, still had to raise the youngerchildren and try to keep things going.
He didn't live to see five of his sons go off to serve in the CivilWar, nor to bear the grief of knowing one of them would never return.Jane did, and struggled through as women alone have always done. Wehave no record of her last years, but from the way her children turnedout, she must have been a strong woman and role model. She died in1871, aged 61."

Question? The information on the children John, Robert, and George'sbirth indicates that their mother's name was Anne from the years1805-1809 in North Carolina. There is a marriage listed for GeorgeGriffin 27 July 1814 in Guilford County, North Carolina, and anothermarriage listed for George Griffin 27 Aug 1816, and both women hadfirst names of Anna. Is it possible that George Washington Griffinhad an early first marriage at 16 years of age? For now I have placedit as that way in the genealogy line until a copy of the marriagelicense information can be obtained or proven differently. The reasonfor doing that is, there is no wife or female age 16 - 45, or over 45years listed for George Finley Griffin in the 1820 Federal Censusrecord in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Family tradition maintains that our Griffin line descends from thefour Griffin brothers who emigrated from Ireland to Boston in thelatter half of the 1700's. Two of them, James and William, settleddown there and were on the tax rolls. They built Griffin's Wharfwhere the Boston Tea Party took place and, after the wharf burneddown, James stayed in the area, but William disappeared. It is thenthought that William went to Virginia where John Finley was born in1802 (census reports contradict the date and area)(We know it to beNorth Carolina now). Unfortunately, documentation for this story hasyet to be found.
William Maurice Ferry said that his mother Blanch Griffin Ferry(granddaughter of Finley) said the brothers were kicked out of Irelandfor stealing sheep. She never wanted to discuss it because it was notconsidered "nice."
Donald Alton Griffin (great-grandson of Finley) said, no, they werekicked out of Kentucky for moonshining. He might have been thinkingabout Finley and his brothers coming across Kentucky from NorthCarolina to Indiana. They might have paused to make moon shine, butit seems unlikely. Brother Robert, however, made a trip to Kentuckyafter his move to Illinois--a daughter was born there before hisreturn to Illinois. He may have indulged in a little free enterpriseand been asked to leave. Interesting to contemplate.

This record refers to the George Griffin who is shown as the father ofJohn Finley Griffin, George Griffin, Robert Griffin, and others. Theproblem here is that there is very little that can be proven aboutthis individual.
We do not know if he had one or two wives. If the North CarolinaGrooms List record showing a marriage between one George Griffin andAnne Fields dated 27 Jul 1814 refers to this individual, then thiswould be the Annie referred to in the Indenture. It would alsoindicate that George had another wife who was the mother of the olderchildren. If there was another wife, we do not know her name.
We do know that as of 1830 this George Griffin lived in WashingtonCounty, Indiana with his wife. From an Indenture dated about 1839 weknow that his wife's name was Annie. We do not know Annie's maidenname. Based upon the North Carolina Grooms List record, it couldpossibly be Fields, but we do not know that for sure. We do know thather maiden name was not BURKETT. The people who are thought by some tobe her parents, James Burkett and Eliza Cousins, were younger thanboth George and Annie and therefore could not have been Annie'sparents.

All researchers still showing the name BURKETT for George's wife Annieshould correct their records.

In addition, the George Griffin who married Hannah Albright inRockridge, Virginia about 1803 is a different individual from thisone. I have been in contact with a descendant of that couple and hehas ample documentation of the fact that they never left Virginia andare buried there. Researchers showing Hannah Albright as a member ofthe Griffin family in this database should remove her from theirrecords.

Excerpts: Page 4: "It's difficult to trace the line of Jane Giles'father, William. There are many, many William Giles' listed in therecords of Amherst Co., VA, and also in Randolph Co., NC, but thereare no ages listed. There is a case, though, for the supposition thatWilliam was either the son or grandson of Crispin Dunbar Giles, whowas born in England in 1715 and came to Randolph Co., NC, in 1739. Heraised at least eight children with his wife Margaret Murray Giles.After her death, he married again (at age 104) and had two morechildren. William and Polly's son, William F., had a son namedCrispin Dunbar Giles, who served in the Civil War, then stayed in theregular army and was later killed by an Indian.
At any rate, William married Polly Bowman on 10 Mar 1808 in AmherstCo., VA. This may have been his second marriage, as one other Gilesresearcher thinks William fathered Eli Giles by his first wife.William and Polly then trekked over to Randolph Co., NC., where JohnGiles was born 29 Apr 1808.
They all moved to Lawrence County, Indiana, in 1828 and settled in ornear Mitchell, IN. Polly's father, William Bowman, had been settlednear Pekin, Washington Co., IN. (the next county) since between 1814and 1818. In the meantime, either the Griffins followed the Gilesfrom NC., or they all came together, because Jane married the oldestof three Griffin brothers, John Finley Griffin, in Pekin on 24 July1828. Her sister Polly married William Porter there on 4 June 1829.
Jane and Finley's (as he was called) first three children were born inIN., then in 1833 they journeyed with the Porters and John's youngerbrother George to the Moline/Rock Island area. This was formerSauk-Fox land that had been opened by the government after the BlackHawk War."
Page 5, excerpts: "In 1843, another wave of IN relatives arrived inIL. Finley's brother Robert came with his family, William F. Gilesand his family, and perhaps Polly Giles and daughter Nancy ( etc...).There is a Marion (?) age 60, b. NC, and Nancy age 30 in the Pettiferhouse in the 1850 census. In 1860, Nancy is at the William Gileshouse. Finley was dead by the time this last census was taken, but inhis will, there is a receipt noting, "John F. Griffin to WilliamGiles, Jr. for keeping Nancy Giles per agreement from June 1st 1857 toDecember 1st 1859 amounting to ninety dollars". The originalagreement was for three dollars a month from June 1st 1857 toSeptember 1st 1860, amounting to one hundred five dollars. Nancy musthave had some disability (or else this is how they managed the supportof unmarried women) and they shared in her care. Nancy died in 1885at the Rock Island County Ams House."
