    Place of birth given as : Lockerbie, Moffat, Dunbarton, Scotland, which cannot be correct, given Lockerbie, Moffat, Dumbarton are three differnt places! Dunbarton is a county.

    Equally, he could have been both a Colonel and an Ensign - but not both at the same time.

    Served in Holland and in the British Scotch Brigade with his two sons, Lieutenant James Douglas and Ensign Queensberry Douglas.

Married 23 Nov 1767 in Edinburgh, or 18 Dec 1767 South Leith,. Subscribed to: "Collection and Abridgement of Celebrated Criminal Trials in Scotland," by Hugo Arnot, Esq. Also: "Poems, chiefly in the Scottish Dialect" (3rd Ed) by Robert Burns. Listed in Williamson's Directory of Edinburgh for 1773-74, 74-75, 75-76 (Merchant, Counsellor, Espquire, Exchange--Macer's Land, North End of the Bridge). James Torry and Jean Halliday were married 22 Nov 1767. James Torry was the son of John Torry and Janet Miller (Janet was the daughter of James Miller).

    A surgeon in Moffat

    It should be stated that Archibald ancestory seems to be at doubt as he, in 1762, paid ?20 in legal expences in an attempt to prove his rights to certain lands in Morton and Lochrinnie.

    He claimed to be descended from William Douglas of Whittinghame, son of Sir James Douglas, 2nd Lord of Dalkeith.

    This claim was later taken up by Major Andrew Douglas, Lanarkshire Militia, of Hawtree House.

    The is in The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh a letter from Kenneth Douglas to Dr Struthers identifying a pocket case of instruments as having belonged to his great-great-great grandfather, Archibald Douglas (1703-1786), who practiced in Moffat and Lockerbie and suggesting the stethoscope dates at least from the 1840s when his father, Dr G Halliday Douglas, later President of the RCPE, was a physician to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
