Decd. Peter Buel now informs this Court that the said Jacob Bissell, the son (who was a minor about 16 years of age), is also lately deceased Intestate and without Issue. For himself and his wife Mary, and also for and in behalf of the children borne of her, he Claimed all the Estate of Jacob Bissell, the son deceased, and prayeth the Court to so decide. John Pettebone, Jr., in behalf of Mary his Wife, and Stephen Pettebone, in behalf of Deborah his Wife, sisters of Jacob Bissell, the Father, and John Bissell, son of John Bissell, one of the Brothers of Jacob Bissell, the Father Decd, and their Children Representing them, appeared before this Court and Claimed the same estate, as being next of kin to both the said Jacob Bissells, the Father and the son, and heirs of the sd. Jacob Bissell, the Father, who was the last possessor thereof, and exhibited their pleas and reasons to show their sd. right, and prayed that an order of the Court may be made settling the same on them. The Court ordered the Estate to Peter Buel his Wife Mary, and their Children. The other parties appealed to the Court of Assistants, who reversed the decision, giving the Intestate Estate to the Brothers and Sisters of Jacob Bissell, The Father, deceased.

I, John Pettibone of Simsbury, in the County of Hartford, do make this my last will and testament: Imprimis. I give unto my wife Mary 1-3 part of all my moveable estate, to be at her own dispose forever; and also the use of my now dwelling house, and the homelott and orchard on which my house standeth, during the term of her natural life; and also the use of 1-3 part of all my improveable land (excepting that part of my homelott on the east side of the highway, on which my barn now standeth); and also the use of 1-2 of my barn, and the whole of the yard by the barn, next to David Phelps's lott, during the time of her natural life. I give unto my daughter Catherine a feather bed with a bedstead and all the furniture belonging to it, and also the use of 8 acres of meadow land, to be taken out of my lott in Manto Meadow, during the time of her natural life; also I give to my daughter Catherine ?100. I give to my daughter Sarah the sum of ?100 with what I have already given her. I give unto my daughter Abigail the sum of ?100 with what I have already given her. All the rest of my estate, real and personal, I give unto my two sons, John and Samuel, equally divided between them, to them and their heirs forever. I give unto my wife Mary and to my daughter Catherine all my provisions, both corne and meat, that I shall leave at my decease. I appoint my beloved wife Mary and my two sons John and Samuel to be executors.

Know all men by these presents: That I, John Pettibone of Simsbury, in the County of Hartford, have formerly made my last will and testament, which is written on the other half of this sheet, dated 8 February, 1733-4, which I do hereby ratify and confirm to be my last will and testament, and make this following codicil in addition thereto, viz: Whereas, my beloved wife Mary is under low circumstances and unable to provide for or help herself, I do, in addition to what I have already given her, devise and order that my executors shall sell and dispose of my lott of land lying on the north end of Mount Philip, in that tract of land called the Hogs-Skin, and the value or produce thereof they shall dispose and improve for the maintenance and support of my sd. wife if she shall come to want; and if not, then sd. land to be disposed of as in my will aforesd. is provided. And I do, in addition to my will aforesd., appoint my son-in-law Amos Phelps to be an executor to my sd. last will with the other executors therein named. And my will is that this codicil be and allowed to be part of my last will and testament. 31 December, 1740.

Court Record, Page 104--23 December, 1741: The last will and testament of John Pettebone was now exhibited in Court by Samuel Pettebone of Goshen and Amos Phelps of Simsbury, two of the executors named in sd. will. John Pettebone, one of the executors, objected to the probate of this will, but withdrew his appeal to the Superior Court and accepted the trust of executorship, 2 April, 1742.

BISSELL ANCESTRY
The Coat-of-Arms described in Burk's "Complete Armory," and registered at the College of Heralds, is as follows:

Arms--Gules, on a bend, Argent; three escallops, sable.

Crest--A demi-eagle with wings displayed, sable, charged on the neck with an escallop shell, orl.

Motto--In Recto Decus--Variously translated, "In Rectitude, Honor," and "Honor is to be found on the straight road."

The Coat-of-Arms used by General Daniel Bissell and his descendants varies from the original Bissell Coat-of-Arms in the shape of the shield and the drawing of the eagle. These differences are accounted for by the fact that the descent is through a cadet house. The motto is Paratus et Fidelis--"Ready and Faithful."

The name has many variations: Bisselle, Byssell, Bysselle, Bissel, Bessell; Buissel is found in the Doomsday Book; Buscel, commonly Bushell; Buscall, a Huguenot name in London, 1618; Bichell, Norman-French; Bushall, Bizzell, Bisley, Bixley, Beasley, Bussell.
It has been proved that the family of Bissell is of Huguenot origin. The author of the present record, in reading Volume II of Stiles' "Ancient Windsor," at the New York Public Library, found an entry in pencil, evidently made by some other searcher, reading, "John Bissell's Huguenot Bible in Weston, Pennsylvania."

The family of John Bissell, who settled in Windsor, Conn., is the only Bissell family definitely known to have come to this country and all the colonial families are descended therefrom.

JOHN BISSELL was born in Somersetshire, Eng., 1590 or 1591, died at Windsor, Conn., Oct. 3, 1677. He married, first, in England. Neither the name nor the date of birth of this first wife is known and her death is variously recorded as 1640, May 21, 1641 and 1642. The "Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy," published by A. N. Marquis & Co., Chicago, gives the name of his first wife as Mary Drake, but this information may be erroneous, there being a possibility that the name was confused with that of Mary, the eldest daughter of John Bissell, who married Jacob Drake. John Bissell was married a second time, but the name of his second wife in unknown. In the "History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut," by Henry R. Stiles, in the list of Deaths in Windsor in 1640, we find recorded the death of "John Bissell's wife," and, again in 1665, "the wife of John Bissell, Senior." In the "Genealogical Dictionary of New England," by James Savage, we find the following, relating to John Bissell, Senior: "His widow died 21st day of May following (the birth of Joyce in 164-) and his next widow died the 29th of November, 1665, but of both the names are unknown." Again in Stiles's "Ancient Windsor:" "Nathaniel doubtless resided on the river bank below the Scantic from the time of his marriage (1662)--John Bissell, Sr., evidently died here (at Nathaniel's).

JOHN BISSELL, of Plymouth, Mass., 1628, and Windsor, Conn., 1639/40, of Huguenot descent, came with wife Mary (Drake) Bissell, aged 26 years, and three children. Built the first ferry across the Connecticut River. He was made Juror at Hartford in 1640/43, October, 1645, March, 1647, 1648. He was Deputy to the General Court in 1642, and attended forty-six sessions of the General and Particular Court before the Union of New Haven and Connecticut Colonies, and served in all as Juror twelve sessions of the Court at Hartford. John Bissell was Proprietor of Stratford and Deputy there, 1645/59, and in 1654, Assistant Magistrate. See American Ancestry, Vol. II, p. 168. Some of the names of Soldiers found in an old book of Records; Capt. John Bissel, Nathaniel Bissel, John Terry, John Partee, and Thomas Moore. See State Archives, Hartford, Conn., Travel, 373/37, p. 196. John Bissell was the first Settler on the East Side of the Connecticut River at Windsor, Conn. He was a soldier in King Philip's War, in 1675; Capt. John Bissel and Nathaniel Bissel of Windsor, Troopers, in 1676. John Bissell in Troop of Cavalry of 60 members. In 1675, the Bissel House was used as the Garrison. See Col. Dau. 17th Century, p. 183; Index; John Bissel, 1591-1677, b. Eng., Served in King Philip's War in 1675, Deputy 1648-59, Windsor, Conn. See Soc. Col. Wars, p. 46, John Bissell was Quartermaster of a Troop of Horse at Hartford, Conn., in 1677. This is surprising, in view of the fact that John Bissell, Sr., would have been in his late eighties at this time. Yet in Stiles' account to King Philip's War, the statement is made, "In an old book of rates we find the following names of Windsor Troopers, who were in actual service and received 6s 8d each 'on war account': Captain John Bissell, John Bissell, Jr., and others. John Bissel, Jr., Capt. at Bolton, Deputy, 1751, Lieut., 1768. After King Philip's War, there seems to have been a

period of great distress in some of the New England Colonies, but not so great in Connecticut, for Connecticut sent Contributions to the other Colonies. In the "Account of what persons of Windsor gave to the voluntary contributions made for the poor in want in other Colonies," we find these contributions: John Bissel, 2s; John Bissell, Jr., 5s; Thomas Bissell, 1?, Samuel Bissell, 4s, and Nathaniel Bissell, 1?.

John Bissell died Oct. 3, 1677, aged 86 years. His will was dated Sept. 25, 1675; his sons John and Thomas made executors, Deacon John Morse and Hon.. Daniel Clark Overseers of his will. Codicil to his will dated April 6, 1677. Inventory was 520P, 16s, 3d. Appraised Oct. 22, 1677. John Bissell's first wife died May 21, 1641, and his next wife died Nov. 29, 1665.

(*)BISSELL, MR. JOHN, of Windsor, was a Juror at Hartford in 1640, 1643, Oct. 1645, and March '47 and '8; Deputy to the General Court in 1642, and attended 46 sessions of the General and Particular Courts before the union of the Conn., and N. Haven Colonies, and in all served as Juror 12 sessions of the Court at Hartford. He was an enlisted trooper for Windsor, in 1657-8. He was an important and early settler at Windsor as early as 1640, this family were connected with several of the best families in the colony by marriage. John Bissell was ferry-man at Windsor in 1640. He was frequently appointed upon important Committees by the General Court of Conn.; his wife d. 1665. Thomas Bissell in 1674, and Samuel Grant of Windsor were appointed by the General Court, to lay out a grant of land to Goodman Buckland, another grant to "Sarg't John Wadsworth;" also 120 acres granted to Mr. John Porter. John Bissell of Windsor was confirmed by the General Court, Quarter Master of
(*)March 24, 1651; "theare ware three men chosen to take a vew of the Towne (of Windsor,)
according to the order of Court for that purpose," viz., Henry Wolcott, Commissioner;
John Bistell, Matthew Grant.

Aug. 24, 1653; John Bissel, David Wilton, Wm. Gaylord, and John Moore, were "chosen
Debetys for the Ginerall Court "to be held on the 2d thursday in Sept. next."

Dec. 6, 1658; John Bissell Sen., Mr. Wolcott, Mr. Newbery, David Wilton, and Matthew
Grant, appointed selectmen of Windsor, and on the 13th of Dec. "determined that provision
should be made upon the top of the meeting house, from the Lanthorn to the ridge of the howse
to walk conveniently, to sound a trumpet or drum to give warning to meetings."

John Bissell, Mr. Phelps, Deckn. Gaylor, and David Wilton, were elected at Windsor, to the
General Court of Conn, Aug. 21, 1652, for the next May. "Aug. 20, 1652; debities chosen for
ye Gineral Court to be holden on ye 9th day of September following, Mr. Phelps, Deakn. Gayler,
John Bissell, David Wilton." Matthew Grant, chosen Town Clerk. Townsmen chosen, Deken

Nathaniel Bissell contracted for the ferry over the great river in Windsor for seven years; in 1675, the council at Hartford, ordered "a garrison kept at Nath'l Bissell's, Tho's Burnham's, Mr. John Crow's, and at Nabuck, and Mr. Willy's his farm." His will was dated Sept. 25, 1673; his sons John and Tho's Executors; Deacon John Moore, and Hon. Dan'l Clark, overseers of his will; codicil to his will dated April 6, 1677. Allyn, and Daniel Bissell, accepted the offer and built the first bridge erected over Tunxis River
in Windsor.

(*)EPITAPH.--"Here lyes the body of Mrs. Elizabeth, the wife of Mr. Daniel Bissell, who died
June yc 9th, 1749, aged 21 years. Also in memory of her father Capt. Roger Newbury, who
died in the Kings servis in the Spanish West inges, March 6th, 1741, aged in the 35th year."

(*)EPITAPH.--In memory of Mr. Benoni Bissell, who died August 26, 1761, in the 72d year
of his age. (Stone.) Erected by the first society of Windsor in grateful remembrance of his
generous gift for the support of their school.

(*)John Bissel having made complaint of Susannah Denslow for reproachful speeches which
she hath spoken against the wife of s'd Bissell. The court having considered the complaint, do
order that Henry Denslow, or his wife, shall severely correct their daughter with a rod upon her
naked body, in the presence of Mrs. Wolcott, and Goody Bancroft, this day; and in case it be
not attended to this day, the constable is to see it done the next oppertunity, and the s'd Susannah
is to give security for her good behavior till the court in Sept. next; May 18, 1664. (Court

Coventry--and received his deed of Israel Everett, of Lebanon, Oct. 1715; was the first captain in Coventry; held slaves. Though he moved from Lebanon to Coventry, he originated at Windsor.

BISSELL, SAMUEL, SEN., of Windsor. James Enno, and John Pettibone, Jr., his sons-in-law and Exr's presented his will in 1700. Mary his relict, was his 2d wife. His children were Samuel, Abigail, Mary, Eliz'th, D borah, Harnah, Joshua, Jacob, John. Samuel died before his father. Mary, widow of Samuel, d. June 24, 1718. After the death of his son Samuel, he made a codicil to his will and appointed James Enno and John Pettibone his Exr's in 1700. He died Dec. 3, 1700. Estate, ?495, 3s. 7d. His son Jacob marr'd Mary and resided in Simsbury, where he died Aug. 1, 1694. Estate ?166, 16s. and left his wife Mary with Jacob, an only child aged three months. Mary the widow of Jacob, married Peter Buell for her 2d husband, and she with her husband were admr's on her first husband's estate. Jacob, Jr., b. June 8, 1694;

he died at the age of 16 years, and his property was distributed to his uncles and aunts, the children of Samuel then decea'd. Deborah daughter of Sam'l m. Stephen Pettebone, and Elizabeth her sister m. John Pettebone, and James Enno, marr'd another sister. John Bissell also a son of Samuel, mar'd and had a son John, Jr., who died about 1693 and had neither wife or children. Estate ?64, 18s. John Pettibone, Jr., m. Mary, daughter of Jacob Bissell, Sen., and Stephen Pettibone m. her sister Deborah.

BISSELL, EZEKIEL, from Windsor was a proprietor and early settler at Harwinton 1733-4.

The Bissells of Litchfield are descendants of John of Windsor.

BISSILL, JOHN, removed from Lebanon in 1716, and became the first settler of Coventry; he became wealthy, and had two daughters who m. Jonathan and Israel Fowler.

BISSELL, EZEKIEL of Suffield, m'd Ruth Devotion, Dec. 23, 1742, and had Ebenezer, b. Oct. 25, 1743; Eliphas, b. Oct 11, 1744; Ezekiel, b. March 14, 1746; Margaret, b. Oct. 28, 1747, d. Dec. 1747; Ruth, b. April 20, 1750; 2d Margaret, b. Sept. 1748, died the same month.

BISSELL, JOSHUA, weaver of Elizabethtown, N. Jersey 1711, appointed Josiah Ogden of Newark, in N. J., his Lawful Att'y, to take possession of an estate in Windsor, as heir apparent to said Jacob Bissell's estate, his deceas'd brother and his son Jacob then deceas'd, nephew of said Joshua, dated at Elizabethtown, N. Jersey, Sept. 28, 1711.

Byssell has one coat of arms. Bissell has one coat of arms.

BISSELL, REV. HEZEKIAH, graduated at Y. C. 1733, and settled in the ministry at Wintonbury, (Bloomfield,) Jan. 1740.

John Bissell, Sen., John, Jr., Nathaniel Bissell, Samuel and Thomas Bissell, were all freemen at Windsor as early as 1669. Bessell or Bissell, John, took the oath of fidelity at Pamaquid in 1674. Eighteen of this name have graduated at Yale College.

Will dated 2 December, 1707 : I, John Pettebone, Ser., do make this my last will and testament : I give to my wife Sarah, I will and give to her, my household goods that belongs to the house within doors, to be for her comfort while she lives, and at her disposal when she dies. I give to my eldest son John Pettebone, besides what I have formerly given him, all that land joining to Samuel Wilcockson, Jr. I give to my son Stephen Pettebone, besides what I have already given him, the 1-2 of my 40-acre lott ; also my land which have at Barn Door Hills. I give to my son Samuel Pettebone, besides what I have already given him, the other half of my lot at the West River with his brother Stephen, and my lot in Hazel Meadow, and the half part of my lotment of land at Second Brook. I give to my son Henry Pettebone the 1-2 part of my house and homested, with the lands that are mine adjacent, the other half of my Nod Meadow lot, and the other moiety of my lot upon Second Broo,. I give to my daughters, besides what they have already received : to Sarah, ?20 ; to Rebeckah, ?3 ; to Anne, ?20 ; also to my grand-child Sarah Mills, that lives with me, ?5 ; and in case of her decease this ?5 to go to the other grandchildren by the name of Mills.
