2. | James Johnstone was born about 1795 in Rae Hills, Dumfriesshire, Scotland (son of George (of Axeltreewell Farm) Johnstone and Grizel (Grace) Irving); died in 1865 in Scotland. Notes:
"My one gt grandmother, Margaret Irving Smith (married to ChristopherJohnstone (1828-1911), son of James, Dr. William's brother,) grew up inMoffat, Dumfries. Her mother was Janet Rollo Irving (from what I know---all the Irvings in the family were cousins to each other -- i.e. Jamesjohnstone (b. c 1795)(my gtgt) was married to Mary Irving; and Dr.William (James brother) was also married to Mary Crone Irving (theirwives were cousins). I had quite a few family photos ---including a picof the stone house in Moffat, the Smith home. The Smiths had a businesson the High Street in Moffat (surgeons/clinic/druggists/parfumerie) "

"In the case of my Johnstone line,
my Mother's first cousin had the Johnstone Family Bible, publ. 1698,with the first entry 1758 written by a Janet H. Johnstone. My grandmother(Janet Robina Johnstone) MacLean descended from George Johnstone (d. 1817at 80) and Grizel(Grace) Irving (d. at fifty in 1800) his third wife. They are buried in Hoddam Parish graveyard. Axeltreewell Farm, n ofEcclefechan was their home. George had nineteen children, three of whomwere doctors, grad. From U. of Edn. Dr. William (my grandmother attendedher granduncle William's funeral when she was a child) was a childhoodfriend of Thomas Carlyle and they roomed together at the Un. of Edin.Thos. Carlyle sent Dr. William first editions of his books as they werepublished). Another granduncle of my grandmother was personal physicianto Sir John Moore (he'd been a friend of John Moore's brother) and theywere both killed at the Battle of Coruna Spain 1809. But like the MacLeanline I have never checked out George Johnstone's parents, etc. (As mothersaid, the Camerons and MacMillans were always talking about ancestry!!) "
